^ Ok i'll take devil advocate since everyone is uses this praise and it means nothing to me.

"they do a much better job of cramming different things to do and rewarding exploration."

Go out there and get those coins!

i will say the coins searching is more fun and rewarding than moon collecting. because there are less coin piles than moons and they are hidden in places where you acutally need to platform to get to instead of just jumping on three easy platform or turning around a corner that you never seen.

You basically have to go off screen to areas that you know that the game doesn't want you to go to.

if you want to grind for the coins, which i'm not saying you should. you can get 200 coins by doing that hidden dinosaur area in the dino level. there are so many enemies there and all have to do is run around as a t-rex. there is also one area with a pile of coins on top of the entrance. i forgot the place. it give you about 100 coins. all you have to do is a wall jump to a dive to get to it.

^i see. my friend and i where playing on his game and he collect most of the moons on the dinosaur level and the bird only gave him one tip and then he said there are no more tips, but there were about 8 open slots. i guess those eight can't be collected until you beat the game.

Wait, you're making these comments on the quality of the postgame and hint system without actually beating the game or making use of the hint system yourself?

there's no sense of progression outside of some bossfights it could be beaten in a couple days at most with nary a sweat

Are you new to Mario games? There hasn't been one yet that can't be beaten in a couple days with nary a sweat. Heck, the original few were literally designed to be beaten in a single sitting, courtesy of lacking a save feature. They really aren't hard games to beat. 100% will take some searching and tricky platforming, but that's completely true of Odyssey as well.

K, 100% finished finally

Pros: fun

Cons: too easy excepting 1 or 2 post game moons or challenges, hours of coin farming needed to 100% complete everything

Finished 100%, with the exception of grinding coins for the last few costumes. This is a delightful game. I'll echo the complaints about the coin grind. It wasn't really a problem to hit 999 moons, since I'd already bought 20-25 before collecting the last of the regular ones, and I had ~8500 coins on me when I finished that collection, so it didn't take much time at all to grind out the 17 moons I still needed after spending those (and it would have been even less if I hadn't bought one of the 3000-coin costumes already). Even so, it was kind of annoying, and to get the last few costumes, I'm looking at another ~18,000 to grind, which I don't know that I'll ever feel like doing.

That said, as much as I don't like that, it's a pretty minor blemish on what was otherwise an absolute joy to play. Heck, the grind isn't even that bad, and in other games I probably wouldn't think twice about it. It's just that it's so flagrantly at odds with how wonderfully designed the rest of the game was that it feels out of place, making me not want to do it and tarnish my memory of the game with another boring endgame grind. This is a game that made me smile almost continuously, and as much as I could complain about the coin grind, that's really only because even such a minor problem seems exaggerated when it's getting in the way of the sheer fun I had with the game.

I still have a lot of moons to go, but I don't feel like I'm going to have to grind many coins to get everything. Granted, I did use the two wedding amiibo, but that's only a savings of 6000, and you guys are talking about numbers much larger than that.

I'm not sure if that's a good or bad reflection of my skills. Probably a bad one that means I've been doing more fruitless wandering than you guys. Of course I could be totally misjudging the numbers, I'll update on my final coins needed if this topic is still around by that time.

I have like 250 moons or something. I like it but I also kinda want this game to be over with because I also want to play other games as well.

Collecting all of the regular moons will take you up to 880ish, so you'll need about 12,000 coins to hit 999. On top of that, there's one costume for 9999 coins, then another four outfits that cost 3000 each for a total of 22,000 for the endgame costumes, or 16,000 if you've got two for free. That's not as bad as it looks on paper, since it's not like you aren't already collecting coins as you go through the game, but I'd still be looking at grinding another 12,000 even if I'd used those amiibo, and that's after using the ones I'd already accumulated.

Now, the grind's not actually that bad. It does go quite quickly, as daunting as the numbers look, and I imagine I could probably finish it off in an hour or two. But that's an hour or two of running the same subzone repeatedly, which is pretty dull and a really unpleasant contrast with the variety and fun of the rest of the game.

Alright, finally got all non-shop moons. I need 67 more moons and I was about 400 coins from my last costume, so that brings the total to around 7000 for me. But like I said earlier, I think that's probably more of a bad reflection of my skills than a good one. I died a lot at the Darker Side, and each time doing that gets you a few hundred.

For me, it's the best non RPG Mario of all time. So much fun and it even got me a little misty eyed on more than one occasion. Beautiful game.
