It should not be law enforcements job to literally tell people to not talk/confess. It seems like people in here want cops to basically sit suspects down and go Now hold on. Before you say anything, repeat after me: I want a lawyer. Okay, good. Now we cant talk to you.

You are, I hope, aware that American police absolutely do have a legal requirement to inform the suspect that he doesn't have to talk to them. "You have the right to remain silent" is how it's normally phrased. They also have a legal requirement to obtain counsel for the defendant at his request, since they're hardly going to let the suspect leave their custody and find one himself, and this is true even though that counsel's first piece of advice for the suspect is generally going to be "Stop talking to the police, immediately". So, yes, the police absolutely do have legal obligations to do things that make their job harder. That's why it's important that cases like this one be subjected to scrutiny; the people 'on the spot' who are deciding whether it's a real request for a lawyer have built-in incentives to decide that it is not.

Edit: And if the suspect has to say "Begin request: I would like a lawyer. End request", verbatim, in order to secure his right to a counsel, then someone needs to tell him so, and the only "someone" guaranteed to be on site are the police. So if we're deciding that suspects must be clear, succinct, and explicit when requesting counsel or the police are free to disregard that request, then the police now have a new responsibility to inform the suspect of that requirement.

I'm not going to jump into this whole thing, but:

Innocent men have nothing to fear by this law in and of itself, because an innocent man won't confess a crime they didn't commit without some major corruption in the process

You are wrong. You are objectively, heinously wrong. Please fix this.

(also: one of the Miranda rights is to inform the accused that they have a right to an attorney:
The Miranda ruling says
...The person in custody must, prior to interrogation, be clearly informed that he/she has the right to remain silent, and that anything the person says will be used against that person in court; the person must be clearly informed that he/she has the right to consult with an attorney and to have that attorney present during questioning, and that, if he/she is indigent, an attorney will be provided at no cost to represent him/her.

I would like an example of a situation that would cause someone to confess to a crime they didn't commit without corruption in the process

Keeping in mind that coercion and the suspect being in a mentally unfit state to answer questions alone would be corruptions in the process

I don't even know what you're arguing. "Major corruption" implies to me an accusation that cops are using dirty tactics, but that's not the root problem here.

Are you saying that, if the legal system were working perfectly, an innocent man would never have anything to fear? Because of course that's true, and of course that's not the world we live in. We live in a world where many do not get adequate defense, where there is strong incentive to take a plea bargain rather than attempt to win a fight they have no guarantee they can win, and where the penalty for failure is immense. In a perfect world, of course, going to trial when innocent is a foolproof strategy; in reality, that is often foolhardy.

This isn't a hypothetical. This is an actual outcome that has actually happened to actual Americans, and your professed ignorance to it is terrifying. There is a list of confessions a mile wrong that have been, say, overturned by DNA evidence.

Like,
The Innocence Project writes,

Sometimes law enforcement use harsh interrogation tactics with uncooperative suspects. But some police officers, convinced of a suspects guilt, occasionally use tactics so persuasive that an innocent person feels compelled to confess. For instance, it is perfectly legal for law enforcement to employ deception or trickery in the interrogation room. Some suspects are untruthfully told that there is already evidence pointing to their guilt, such as a forensic test that links the suspect to the crime. Some suspects have confessed to avoid physical harm or discomfort. Others are told they will be convicted with or without a confession and that their sentence will be more lenient if they confess. Some are told a confession is the only way to avoid the death penalty. These tactics can be persuasive in eliciting a false confession.

Perfectly legal, all of it, no "corruption in the process," and now innocent people have confessed.

Imo a lot of that stuff isn't really above the table and would count as corruption in the process, though, whether it's technically allowed by the law is another thing.

Like your boogeyman should be that stuff being allowed as standard more than anything, cause that kinda stuff is basically coercion.

Based on the numbers I saw my taxes would go up by a little over $1000 a year after factoring in the increased standard deduction. Luckily I go to a public school where the up until now meaningless tuition number is fairly low.

Apparently if I went to MIT (chosen as an example private school for the numbers given) my taxes would go up by like $9000 (note: graduate students make like $35000 at most, and many make quite a bit less than that)

Jesus christ.

Just to put this in perspective for everyone else--if I'm interpretting this right then this means I would to be paying something like 45% of my income just to income tax when my actual income should be putting me in the 15% tax bracket.

Well, actually that might not be the case for me since I think post-candidacy students have lower tuition? However if the proposed change had happened last year then that is what would have happened to me at any rate.

Which, again, isn't much of a surprise because most of the info we've gotten about him seemed to suggest so from the moment he was dispatched from the administration. Interestingly enough, though, they're going after his son as well.

Secretary of commerce failed to disclose business relationships with Russia when being confirmed for his position:

https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/politics-news/amp/leaked-documents-show-commerce-secretary-concealed-ties-putin-cronies-n817711

Wilbur Ross, the commerce secretary in the Trump administration, shares business interests with Vladimir Putins immediate family, and he failed to clearly disclose those interests when he was being confirmed for his cabinet position.

Ross a billionaire industrialist retains an interest in a shipping company, Navigator Holdings, that was partially owned by his former investment company. One of Navigators most important business relationships is with a Russian energy firm controlled, in turn, by Putins son-in-law and other members of the Russian presidents inner circle.

Some of the details of Rosss continuing financial holdings much of which were not disclosed during his confirmation process are revealed in a trove of more than 7 million internal documents of Appleby, a Bermuda-based law firm, that was leaked to the German newspaper Sddeutsche Zeitung. The documents consist of emails, presentations and other electronic data. These were then shared with the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists a global network that won the Pulitzer Prize this year for its work on the Panama Papers and its international media partners.

From the same source that uncovered the Panama papers.

Authorities revealed that a heroic citizen in the church grabbed his rifle and confronted the suspect, who was armed with a Ruger AR assault type rifle. The local citizen pursued the suspect, who ran off the road and crashed and was found deceased in his vehicle. We dont know if it was a self inflicted gunshot wound or if he was shot by our local resident who engaged him with gunfire, authorities said. It was the largest mass shooting in Texas history.

Take with grain of salt. Not entirely confirmed by major outlets.
