I have seen the name a few times recently but just kinda assumed from the name it would be mindless fluff and/or fanservice. I saw Menji's topic wherein Sayoko kills herself and it seems weird stuff is gonna start happening and now I'm kinda interested.

Mainly I wanna know how dark/scary/whatever it gets, as I am game for that but only up to a certain point. I handled Umineko and (what's out on Steam of) Higurashi okay but wouldn't wanna go much darker. I also don't like jump scares at all. Should I get it at some point?

It's completely free to play:

http://store.steampowered.com/app/698780/Doki_Doki_Literature_Club/

There are 2 jump scares but a lot of people don't encounter them at all while playing. One of them only happens if you're streaming the game. The other involves having a specific condition to trigger it.

It's also really short, like 2-5 hours, completely dependent on how fast you read.

Believe me, I'm like you when it comes to horror stuff and I handled the game pretty well. It's the psychological stuff though that tends to get people. I had no problems with it, other people have said to have really gotten hit hard by it.
