I don't think anyone on CE makes a living by writing fiction. That is incredibly rare. My understanding is the majority of people who do make a living writing fiction, mostly factory produce an ungodly amount of awful romance novels every year

the rest are jk rowling and grr martin

Yeah, in a way, fiction is dying, except for screenplays.

is romance the only genre that sells? erotica and romance? do you know if action & adventure stories sell well?

I'm still finishing up my books before I put them up for sale, and I don't see myself making a living off this, just a side job for a little extra cash.

You have to imagine what would someone now-a-days really take time out of their day to read. I recommend something scandalous, but that's where your imagination and creativity come from. That's what you got to make, the story that will make someone take time out of their day to want to read, That's what you write my friend.

my goal is to get to a point where my web novel makes like 100/mo on patreon, but that is pretty unlikely since it's going to be a really niche thing not many people know about

I don't make a living off of it unfortunately. Still working on how to market.

I've got 7 books to work with though so hopefully sales pick up.

More that it's incredibly easy to shit out a bunch of them (some authors just copying other stories and changing names and shit from what I've read) and a ton of people being thirsty enough to eat it up.

Good luck to anyone working on a novel or other forms of writing that you want to sell. I've heard it's not easy, and I respect that you're trying to do the thing you probably wish you could be doing on a full time basis.

He means they copy their own stories. Or at least, that's a strategy I've heard. It's just about getting as much content out there as possible and hope random buyers pick it up.

It's either a journal or a novel. You wanna sell or get some traction, people will need samples. I do fiction sometimes too. I'll post a sample of mine if you post a sample of yours. How boh dat?

Well, I'm going to share this short story I wrote with you anyways. **** what anyone thinks. Every writer has a critic.

Untitled
"It all happened in an instant, so quick that nothing could be done. First, he suddenly felt queasy, then his belly grumbled and tossed his stomach around until...it happened. It was so quick it was already over right before it even happened. He could smell the stench of his own vomit. When his eyes opened after hurling, he saw the mess he made on the floor, some of it, a lot of it really, got into the brand new carpet, a fine, luxurious carpet that both his mother and father gladly purchased together, which was actually the last time his parents had any fun at all while they were still together
And, now, being alone with his dad, he knew that he was in trouble, big trouble, extraordinary trouble, because perhaps he was irresponsible in finding that place in the house to vomit, though he didnt find it, the puke found it for him, without his own consent.
And as quick as it all happened, with the aroma of disgraceful vomit in the air, he looked up again, and through his watery eyes, he saw his dad quickly approaching, with definitive paced force. He saw his fathers arms outstretched, hands open wide. His face looked sinister, his teeth were grinding, his jaw pulsating with anger under a tiny spot under his skin. All the boy could do was cry out, as fast as he could...
Dad, Im sorry! Dad, Dad, DADDY PLEASE! I didnt mean to throw... but now he couldnt speak it anymore, as his dads hands clasped firmly around his neck, and squeezed and squeezed and squeezed. He struggled to go on with his apology, but it was all in vain. His eyes kept producing water, because of the vomit, because he was crying, and because his fathers squeeze forced tears out of his eyes.
But, in his mind, he continued, DADDY IM SORRY I THREW UP! I DIDNT MEAN TOO! IM SORRY! IM SORRY! CAN YOU FORGIVE ME?! MOMMY, CAN YOU HELP ME?! IM SORRY! MOMMY! MOMMY WHERE ARE YOU?! MOMmmmmmm... and with those last words in his head, in his heart, he stopped struggling. There was no more life in him to apologizing for anything. Since his father could not forgive him, God himself granted him a pardon, and brought him back home unto Heaven.

I write fiction that doesn't pay anything but keeps my rich girlfriend entertained enough to keep me around. I guess that counts, maybe?

I also am currently in the second round of the hiring process for a video game company that's currently seeking writers. If I get that job I'll be writing full time and making a decent living while also spending my free time on the novel meal ticket.
