I plug it into the wall and the light turns on and it runs, but when I plug the USB in, it gives a message saying it may be malfunctioning.

plug into a different usb port first and see if it works

if still bad and you dont care about data on it, follow these steps:

if you care about the data on it, you're probably fucked but there are extreme measures you can take that have a small chance of temporarily enabling the device.

rip it apart, take out the hdd and buy a lil sata or whatever it is to usb adaptor. i have this nifty little attachment that you can connect to most standard drives that turns em into externals.

Ok, so apparently it's the USB connection on the the HDD. If I press my finger against it a certain way, it'll work again.

But I have like 400 gigs of shit in it >_> I'll go numb if I try to transfer all that shit out to a different HDD lol. It's a Western Digital from 2009, but it broke before some no name HDD I bought in 2007 that I used more often lol
