They've been taught to think that by the people in power with a vested interest in keeping the people divided to maintain that power.
It's so deeply ingrained that no matter how much you bring attention to it and break the whole game down for them, most people will just say you're from the other side and continue to insist that their side is some unquestionably righteous force for good.
