Fun Fact: I have literally only fully beaten one game in the series (Wind Waker), since I was never really a Nintendo kid.

Does it just make sense to play them in release order? I fear there will be some degree of fatigue if I do this, since it really takes a lot of steady engagement for me to stay focused on gaming these days.

(I'll obviously skip the CDi games.)

Clearly, randomize a list and play in no order since it doesn't actually matter what order you play them in.

EDIT: Except for LBW has to be after LttP, that's important.

I said potentially. And there is more than enough argument that SMB isn't even the most influential on its own console. Let alone ever. (I'd argue it's also not the most influential in its own series... SM64)

I am absolutely not skipping the NES games. I've played through a good chunk of the original and loved it.

Also, what the hell is timeline order? I thought the Zelda canon was all kinds of fucked.

You've probably played LOZ 1 and 2 so many times you know where everything is at, but its a product of it's time, try to think back to when you first played it.

It was about wasting hours upon hours exploring and receiving word of mouth from other people.

I don't think TC has any of that. Its archaic and not very intuitive. the Original Zeldas are not necessary to play through anymore.

Well, maybe 2 gets a pass.

It's not.
I mean, some of it doesn't make sense mind you if you want to really extrapolate like Hylian language changes and stuff... but I doubt you care that much about that.

NES Zeldas are among the better entries imo. The weakest era like a ten year span from 2003-2013, or post-WW to post-SS.

I've always wanted to do this. There would be some replays, but I'm gonna wait til my girlfriend and I are living together so she can join in/watch me.

It doesn't matter what order you play them in at all, because linking the games together didn't even start until Skyward Sword and it was all a hilarious retcon anyway.

Except you have to play OoT before MM obviously.

The timeline order would start with Skyward Sword, and after a few games splits into three timelines that you'd just have to choose which one you'd travel down in any order. And it's just really weird.

Ok.

So it starts Skyward Sword, then goes Minish Cap, Four Swords, and finally OoT.

Then it splits in 3

Downfall:
ALttP
Oracle of X
Links Awakening
A Link Between Worlds
LoZ
Adventure of Link

Child:
Majoras Mask
Twilight Princess
Four Swords Adventure

Adult:
The Wind Waker
Phantom Hourglass
Spirit Tracks

Most people have Breath at end of Downfall, but really it can go in either of them that don't flood... It can even go in the flood, but you have to make a lot more assumptions then.

Either way it's at the very end a long time after.

The Legend of Zelda
Adventure of Link

Majora's Mask
Twilight Princess
Breath of the Wild
Four Swords Adventures

Is the correct timeline order iirc. The ---- indicate the timeline splits, where they start. Ocarina of Time jumps off into three different timelines.

Not at all. It varies it up.

Starts 3D
Then 2 in a row 2d
Then back to 3d.

Where as if you do release order.

4 2ds in a row
Then 3 3ds in a row to start.

Zelda II is legitimately a bad game, and it'll only be amplified by playing it now for the first time. I think it can be enjoyed with save states, but I would never recommend it to anyone coming in basically blind and wanting to experience the series. The original is pretty difficult as well, but it's a great game.

TP and SS both kinda drag a bit, but they're fun. Just really long. I also find the Oracles to be pretty dull and draggy on the whole, but I'm certainly in the minority.

PH and ST are definitely the most commonly accepted worst games on the board. PH could be skipped entirely, IMO, but ST has some pretty solid dungeons.

And my last recommendation would be to avoid Tri Force Heroes like the plague. Probably the worst singleplayer experience in gaming, at least from a notable developer. As a multiplayer game, you'd be hard-pressed to find it active, and it's still pretty terrible. If you have three friends who you can play with in the same room or over discord, it's probably a blast, though.

Aside from that, go nuts! One of gaming's greatest franchises!
