The first part, however, is true. Due to hormones and deveopment, males tend to be more aggressive. Mix that with a bit of intense hatred, and a dab of mental instability and viola... you've got a timebomb waiting to blow.

There's definitely some truth to people just not being right, somewhere in their mind. I'd wager you'd have to have something wrong, somewhere, in order to even consider going on a killing spree.

You could have two men, both experiencing similar situations and stress levels. One will work through it, the other will snap.

maybe Europe sent all of the worst mentally/genetically broken people during the mass immigration [1800s-1900s] to clean up all of their country's. plus movie/TV from the 1970s-1990s were notoriously violent[ taxi driver, robocop, the terminator, the blues brothers, the list goes on]
mix that with the fact we lost a shit ton busywork/decent paying jobs, plus new drug keep entering the market and/or being tested on people without know full well of the effects [antidepressants / SSRI's]
pornography/sex is everywhere and too easy to view with an unrealistic level of acting that people cant possibly obtain/recreate so they in theory are [chasing the O-dragon]
there is tons of things that could be triggering it

Talking about men being supported by the patriarchy misses the mark, unless you're going to argue that a patriarchy only exists in America and only supports men in America. Neither is true. Patriarchal cultures exist across the world, just like mental illness.

It's something specific in American culture. I don't think access to weapons is the whole issue either, although that plays a role. My armchair hunch is that it's the media feeding frenzy around these events, paired with celebrity worship. An American emphasis on individualism over community is likely mixed into it too. Then you add in men's preference for guns to commit violent acts, and the stage has been set for mass shootings by men.

I'm sure that's still wrong. But I'm also sure it's a blend. People want to reduce it to a single talking point and it's all but guaranteed to be more complex.

Society sub-consciously teaches men to not show a lot of emotion. Even if you were brought up to be comfortable to show emotion, by the time you start school you start interacting with children who haven't and bullies and that puts pressure on the emotional child to hide their emotions. I know because I was an emotional child until I reached Year 10 in secondary school (It's basically high school, I'm English) where I just switched off and haven't been able to switch myself back on.

Because we as Americans glorify it. We glorify serial killers, national tragedies, etc. It's "cool" to be in the limelight to some people. Look at our video games, our TV content, etc. We glorify violence, We glorify murders and murderers.
