I love the games, but yeah, story is definitely not its strong suit.

Really wish they'd do a remaster of the first 4 -- I like them a lot better.

Story isn't bad, but I never got further than Vol 2 (Currently playing Vol 1 again). Simply Haseo is too much of an edgelord in the beginning.

And the first 4 had better characters/story, but dude, the gameplay was fucking atrocious. G.U. isn't as good either (woopee, 3 different areas), but at least you don't feel like ripping your hair out in combat over how utterly boring it is.

I can agree that the combat in GU is a lot more involved and far less tedious, but even so I have to say that overall when I'm in in areas, it just seems boring.

At least in the first chapter, GU hardly has any variety in either enemies or scenery -- you've got cave dungeons, you've got building dungeons, and then you've got the field dungeons (which are either night, day or raining) -- with very little decorating any of them.

In the first four you had big open fields with structures and points of interest, and monsters would actually wander around the map looking for you. You had ponds where you could upgrade equipment, whacky talking food, etc. You also had a lot more variety in scenery -- grass fields, forests, volcanic, ice plains, deserts. And each field had its own dungeon, which also had more variety.

It also helped that the soundtrack was fantastic, and just worked so well with the combat and scenery.

Don't forget that bikes are ass slow in volume 1 then speed up to usable levels in 2.

All those scenes with them standing there awkwardly as a single person speaks and uses body language.

Even more fun is when your party members stand there awkwardly because they're not involved in the scene at all but it's in a dungeon and shows them anyway. Worst offender is the 4th entry but it was also short so.

Oh god.

I don't even fucking use it in vol. 1 now with the faster walking speed they added in the remasters. Just drove into a wall for an hour to get the book of Ryu up to level 3 and never touched it again.

I like the story in GU more. It had a really good message and i learned a lot about myself. I was a huge edgelord in high school. Helped me through some rough times and it made me appreciate the real world

It says you gotta get it to level 9 having loaded data in from chapters 1 & 2, but it doesn't specify in when you gotta do each of them.

I myself am just trying 100% things chapter by chapter so as not to miss anything. Also trying unlock as many achievements in vol. 1 as possible, so I've just been doing the arena over, and over, and OVER AND OVER.

I'm going to do it in 2 because you have stronger skills that can ohk a lot of the grouped up opponents with shorter animations. 3 won't work because the benefits get messed up every time it tries making you do the follow up x form attack.

I was nearly at 50 when I last played. Dunno how many awakenings I've done, but it's definitely less than that.

26 achievements so far on vol. 1 -- was a bitch tracking down the last few npcs I had to talk to for that one modeling quest.

I'm like 4-5 hours in. Level 15, little bit overleveled since I did all the quests and some keywords I got off the forums. Didn't think I was gonna 100% volume 1 but I might as well. Wish I had more time to play but, you know, life.
