What are you more accepting of? "Bad" games or series getting axed?

Some games are released in whatever state the developers/producers want it to be and regardless of what state that game is, some fans will still buy and play said game. Other fans however hold on buying the game usually because they don't want to pay the full price, want the bugs and kinks to be hammered out first, or simply because they don't want to support whatever practice the developers/producers are doing.

There have been some games where it seemed were not well received by some fans and the developers/producers have kinda put the game series on hold or possibly even axed the series.

For me, I'd rather a series continue in whatever "bad" state it is in with hopes it'll improve with later releases than for the series to be put on hold indefinitely. For the most part, it is the story that I am most interested in regardless of the gameplay.

Do you personally prefer your favorite series to be released in whatever state they are now with hopes that future releases will be better? Or do you feel some series should just end?

Comments and opinions are appreciated,

Thank you

--> "Bad" games. Future releases can potentially be better. <--

Or in the case of ME: Andromeda and No Man's Sky, patched to a playable state one update at a time.

Honestly, I actually WANTED Capcom to put out an 8bit Megaman every year... it didn't even have to be good.

Continue after a bad game, generally. Either the series will die anyway if they can't turn it around after that, or other people will like it and I have no reason to want that taken away from them.

What in the hell is going on in this poll.

it's not that hard to understand.

The first option elaborates about why it's bad to end a series, the second option elaborates why it's a good to end its series. It's unbalanced and the first option makes no sense. And what's with the other option.

The topic question makes sense enough, but the poll is a mess. A mess.

Please clarify. One involves fans continuing to support a series with hopes it'll improve while the other suggest fans to be okay with a series ending before it gets worse.

There's almost always some response that doesn't match with any poll responses so I always have an "Other" option for those responses.

What a weird question. Why wouldn't I want a series to continue and try to fix itself?

Then again, there are some series like Sonic where I kind of wish they would just kill it. It's basically just a running joke at this point, as are its delusional fans who keep getting suckered.

i'd play them. I really need to get around to playing megaman 7 and 8. graphically speaking they look a lot better than the 8 bit ones. but never got far enough into 7 to judge the gameplay.

actually been playing through the old megaman games recently. finally beat the yellow devil without that glitch/exploit

I'd rather a series end BEFORE it has a chance to go bad.

Otherwise, it depends on the circumstance. Did it get picked up by a new development team that makes bad decisions and has no clue what made the series work to begin with? If the series is to continue, I'd rather have the original team behind it.

Aside from that, it's pretty rare for a series to get better after going into a slump. Any actual instance like that is usually a fluke and goes right back to sucking again.

Star Ocean should have stopped after the GBC sequel to Second Story (that we never got in the US).

Final Fantasy should have stopped after X, as far as main titles go (online FFs being fine), until it was ready for a comeback with quality story telling.

Xenosaga episode 3 should have stopped development during its umpteenth change in staff.

Wild Arms should have stopped after the remake of its first game, MAYBE adding what we got for 5, only better in a handful of ways.

Bad series, sure. I mean, nobody wanted another Bubsy. But I think he's talking about bad games from generally good series

Bad games. I can overlook flaws in many games because I hope that the flaws are stepping stones for the series to improve. I mean looking at Assassins Creed Unity and how much of a mess that was I understood that it needed to be that way to build the foundation for the series on this gen systems. Now we have something great like Origins.

Funny thing about this statement is 'Vigilante 8' was the first series to come to mind when I read it (since Luxoflux stopped after the second game). However, I somewhat miss that franchise today so it is one of the games that made me choose my answer.

I am actually surprise that many are more accepting of a game series ending than letting it get worse. I'm playing Deus Ex: Mankind Divided and am concern Square Enix will not make a sequel. Though I guess technically Deus Ex is a sequel. There's also the Mass Effect and Dragon Age series whose fate seems up in the air at the moment.

I think context has a huge amount to do with it. I was annoyed that Thief ended with the 3rd game, but once they released the 4th one I wish they had just left it at 3. I guess I would say it is kind of annoying when a series gets axed, but only if the original creators had long term vision of what they wanted future games to be.

Honestly, I'm very accepting of both.

If a series has nothing but good games, and I see people whining about how the publisher won't put out another installment, my instinctive reaction is, "Come on, guys. It had a good run. Enjoy what we got and be grateful that it never went bad."

On the other hand, if a series I like gets a bad game, there are really only two possibilities. One, I don't buy it, in which case it being bad doesn't really affect me. Two, I buy it just because I'm such a hardcore fan, in which case I'll probably get sufficient enjoyment out of it no matter how bad it is. Even worst case scenario, I can hardly blame the publisher or developer for my poor buying decision.

But I voted "series getting axed" because I think that's usually the better outcome. After all, what the video game industry most needs right now isn't more sequels (and certainly not more bad sequels); it's more standalone games. You know, games which succeed or fail based on the strength of their concept and the quality of their design, not their brand name recognition.

Like others have said, though, it all depends on what the series is and why its latest installment was bad. Was it bad because it's the last new installment was over a decade ago, the original gameplay has no place in the current market, and a different developer revived the series in unrecognizable form just because the series name is well known? Was it because the series concept has been exhausted to the point where all new installments can do is regurgitate the same ideas over and over? Or was it just that the developers were trying some new ideas which didn't work so well? Sometimes a series seemingly stuck in a rut can make a comeback, but usually you can make an educated guess whether or not the next installment of a series will be any good or not. For example, I don't think I'm going out on a limb much when I predict that the next Legend of Zelda game will be great, and the next Alone in the Dark game will be bad.
