I tend to use eBay more. A lot of stuff I buy on there ends up having free shipping anyway, and I don't have to pay $60 a year or whatever to get it. Granted, it doesn't ship as quickly, but it's rare that I really need it in a few days. I also like that basically everyone takes PayPal (though maybe Amazon is like that now too?)

Wut? I use my debit card all the time on amazon.

Guess somethings changed, I actually haven't checked it in a couple years tbh since I just went straight to Ebay.

It used to be Amazon but they have gone downhill with the prices, not stocking games and generally being shit so I now find myself buying more things from ebay.

Electronics, cooking utensils, etc.: either

Does anybody actually like eBay? It provides a useful niche in online shopping and it's not nearly as scam ridden as people act like it is but it's an online pawn shop. It's exactly as dumpy and ramshackle as one would expect.

Amazon, though the service has tumbled in quality over the last year or so. The free or discounted Prime memberships for the welfare crowd really turned me off the company however.

I only use Ebay when I have to, which isn't often. The first few times I tried to use Ebay though, I always got automatically outbid at the last few seconds, with no time to rebid. For years I was convinced that Ebay was a scam.

I agree that it's a good thing, but sometimes it is a bit ridiculous.

I got locked out of my paypal for two weeks recently when I tried making a PSN purchase on their mobile site rather than my ps4. Not sure if it's sony or paypal who thought the account was breached or whatever, but still annoying.

I appreciate that they take security seriously, but two weeks of back and forth emails explaining to them that it was me, on the same wifi network, in the same house, etc before getting my paypal account back was a hassle, then having to re-start every subscription that's through my paypal...Jeez.

I find retro games are almost always cheaper there. And just odds and ends that I never exactly know when I'll need, which aren't enough to justify an Amazon Prime subscription.

At Amazon, those same niche transactions are generally also going to be from independent sellers, though admittedly I don't know exactly how they facilitate transactions in that case. Are they better and more trustworthy than eBay? Anyways, most people have acknowledged in this topic that Amazon is better for everyday, widely-available purchases.

You generally have to watch the end of an auction like a hawk. But I don't really see why it matters when you can auto-bid. In theory you should know the amount you're willing to pay for something, and if it doesn't come to that, oh well. I rarely buy things by auction anyway, it only makes for maybe 10% of my purchases there.

Based purely on my own experience, I'd be more likely to suspect Sony than Paypal in that scenario. Sony has some truly dumb policies when it comes to cybersecurity - and not even "paranoid and overcautious" dumb, just really stupid.

Like, for instance, when I was trying to add a credit card to my account so I could make purchases on PSN a few years back, I discovered that it wanted a character-for-character match of your address as the credit card company had it recorded. That means if Mastercard says you live at "123 Acorn St.", then that is exactly how it must be written - not "123 Acorn Street", not "123 ACORN ST.", not "123 Acorn St" - each bit of capitalization, abbreviation, and punctuation must match what is on file with the credit card company and it only gave you, IIRC, two attempts to get it right before it locked you out from trying again for 24 hours. Oh, but it wouldn't tell you it was a lockout, it just automatically failed all subsequent attempts.

Seriously, I actually gave up trying to buy anything on PSN as a result. It was that bad.
