Alright, throughout that entire plot with all the many possible outcomes for the ending.

Cole Phelps drowns in a fucking sewer. No one kills him, he just drowns in piss and shit and waste water.

The beginning of the game was slow, I fell in love with the homicide faction. By the end of the game it did turn into a drag for me. But overall, my first time playing through I enjoyed the game well enough.

They really could have done more this plot though, so good possibilities... for it to end like this..

Cole Phelps <3 4 life

Yeah it just kinda felt like a forced Rockstar "Your character's got a DARK SIDE" shtick by just making Cole commit adultary with the german jazz singer lady. I feel like the war flashbacks did a decent enough job of showing that he clearly didn't have the best morals and wasn't perfect by any means either (at least compared to the rest of his unit).

Yeah man kind of.

When I first played that scene, tailing Elsa, I was kind of like "woah, is this what I think it is". It did shake up the game, but they only showed Cole's wife like once before that.. So it was just out of the damn blue..

Anyway honestly I thought the fact you run around a sewer flamethrowing people was stupider than 'waah the guy died at the end'. The game to me was about being a detective, running around flamethrowing people seems out of the element

Yeah, that too. I just plain don't like that it happened.

And I forgot about the flamethrower part lmao, that got a bit James Bond-y for this ol' hickory dickory detective game.

I liked how we found out how Phelps got his Purple Heart. I liked how we found out how the whole morphine heist started. I also loved how the last mission kind of tied everything together. And probably my favorite part was the crooked cop that hated Phelps gave the fake eulogy. It was very noire and a final "fuck you" to both the player and Phelps.

The ending fits very well with the noir style of the game (it's in the title!). My main issue with it is that it feels unsatisfyingly abrupt. And also the couple of hours you play as the other guy is ass.

Storywise, the ending is not really where the game falters, IMO.

How was it out of character?

The dude was a shellshocked conflicted war vet with baggage who was deeply unhappy with his own life and met a woman who was full-filling him completing.

AND ITS FUCKING NOIRE

I'm guessing you two never found any newspapers or listened the dialogue on the car rides.

You might have a point if

1. That's was all I said.

2. You weren't solely talking about an affair.

Wanting a Noire story not to have affairs is like wanting a WW2 movie to not feature men, guns, battles or dialogue.

I was solely talking about the affair, and my criticism was that there was no setup for it and it felt completely random and jarring, which it did.

But there was a lot of set up and it was entirely in character.

Cole visits the club repeatedly. She's wound up in the entire heroine deal.

Cole is established deeply as unhappy and insecure in life following the war, fully neurotic and unsure of himself. They talk about it all the time, he's not even comfortable talking about women or his wife.

Him and Elsa even have that big conversation about how he can't just sit and do nothing, he has to help people (in his mind atone for Japan)

It's set up really really well.

There just wasn't a cutscene where Cole turns to the camera and says "Hey I'm going to go cheat on my wife because of my personal problems and this woman excites me." like a COD game would have, which really would be hack writing.

You guys seem mad that the game was well written instead of badly written

More like

*Cole meets Elsa*

*a bunch of other stuff happens*

*SURPRISE! Cole's been having an ongoing affair with Elsa that you, the player, were completely unaware of up to this point*

The problem is it failed to properly establish the relationship between these characters, as well as the relationship between Cole and his wife, so it feels like a random series of events

Fun fact: The reason why Cole gets so angry every time he "Doubts" someone is because for the entire development of the game the options were not "Truth" "Doubt" and "Lie" but "Coax" "Force" and Lie.

The entire point was that Cole was trying to get info out of the perp, the issue is how does he go about it.

However the studio decided against the game developer's wishes that gamers are too stupid to know what "Coax" and "Force" means so they changed it to Truth and Doubt.

This is why half the time you say Truth, Cole acts like they're lying anyway and everytime you say Doubt, Cole gets angry.

It's a shame how crappy for the masse design by comity oversight can tarnish good game design
