Ok so our youngest bailiff "Mike". He's like 35 or something.

This girl "Alicia" started working here as a clerk a couple years ago. She was only here for 6 months or a year, and ended up getting fired for a drug problem.

They were dating when she was working here, but supposedly broke up after she got fired.

I guess she got clean and everything, and they were still secretly seeing each other.

Well she relapsed and unfortunately ended up dying. This was like November 2nd or 3rd.

He left work early without saying a word, was out all last week, and yesterday. Finally came back today but is still very upset(I'm pretty sure the court gave him an ultimatum)

Anyway, idk if I should say anything to him, or just play dumb. Like he's never said anything to me about the situation personally, so I really shouldn't even know I guess. Another co worker told me, but said it was under wraps.

Halp

I was clocking in this morning and Mike walked in. He was looking pretty distraught, so another co worker asked him if he was alright.

Said "not really" and walked away. I'll probably just leave it alone, unless he brings it up

If he's not really talking to people at work about it, it's best not to bring it up

Maybe you could just do something nice for him like get him coffee or something else you know he likes. Your kindness can help a lot.

No, just give him your regards or, better yet, your thoughts and prayers.

Get some drinks after work with him if you want to talk about something personal.

Don't bring it up, it's not your place since you're clearly not close. Just be nice to the guy, I'm sure he knows you know.

Yeah we aren't close at all. In fact, our passing exchanges are always pretty awkward/forced. Still, I'd reach out if it felt appropriate

If you want to be a sympathetic person, just be a sympathetic person. Don't slave over considering whether or not, or how, you should be nice to someone.

I want to be nice, just not sure if it would be crossing a boundary.
