It depends if you're a developer or a consumer.

If they are done well (league of legends, overwatch, etc...) they help gaming by providing a more consistent source of income to devs/publishers.

If they are done badly (battlefront 2, fortnite pve, etc...) they are atrocious and terrible to the consumer.

The only microtransactions I'm okay with are for pure cosmetics. Once you start selling things that affect gameplay, I refuse to buy your game.

Fuck pay to win mechanics.

No, that's DLC, since it's a one-time payment for the material.

Microtransactions tend to be repeatable.

As long as its not pay to win stuff, especially in multiplayer games, then Im ok with it.
Also if the game has a system where you can earn the extra stuff through gameplay, thats even better.

I feel like Overwatch is a great example. The stuff you can buy is cosmetic, doesnt affect gameplay, and can be earned within the game without spending a single dollar.

They help the bottom line of the greedy developers in the short term. It will get worse too, at some point you will have to pay to gave a proper ending (Ending DLC now available!), and all we will get are gimped games like street fighter 5.

But it will make gamers stop playing/buying many games, and it will be the 80s crash all over again

path of exile has functioned for 5 years as pure free to play with microtransactions

most are cosmetic, but their stash tabs are genuinely useful as much of your progress is dependent on trading items since there's a large body of random drops. however, absolutely NOT required.

i paid $10 for their currency stash tab to assist in accruing wealth towards my end-game gear, but didn't really mind that. i progressed for 200 hours without it.
