I think I'm at the age where I should start buying for extended family, but fuck that's stressful.

That's 6+ Extra people I gotta buy for.

its much less stressful during this time of year if you just bow out of exchanging gifts entirely. i started (or stopped, i guess?) doing that about ten years ago and it's been wonderful.

No, we all just agree to not buy gifts but instead just get together for a meal.

that's the spirit. the holiday season should be about family and loved ones, not buying shit you'll most likely throw away in two weeks.

I don't buy gifts for any adults in my family. I get stuff for my nieces, and my cousin's kids if they'll be in town, but that's it. I also told everyone to stop getting me presents but they still do.

Ugh, even if I budget $150 for people's presents, that's less than $20 a person LOL. I'll be buying for 8 people if we count my parents.

Gf and I aren't even exchanging at this point, can't afford it.

I feel you man. I'm not trying to put all of this on a credit card, and be stuck paying it off for months. Holidays shouldn't add this much financial stress

Yeah I make 30k a year, pretty much live paycheck to paycheck. But I own a home, pay all my own bills etc.

One of the cousins I'd be buying for makes 100k a year. Her grandma who I'd be buying for, is a literal millionaire from Lithuania.

they only do because you allow them to. you've bought into the consumerist culture that the American retailer has perpetuated through this idea that you must buy everyone you know a present.

#resist

if you really want to get people you like presents because "its the thought that counts", try making something, or give them something "from the heart", like a card explaining why you like them.

This, I still go eat with my family and everything. But everyone knows not to buy me a gift and I'm not getting them one either.

It's not awkward during gatherings?

Like everyone is exchanging gifts, while you basically sit in the corner?

Nah not really. But I guess I'm used to it and I'm not really into the whole family gathering thing. It could just be me.
