in 2006 everyone laughed and mocked horse armor
then DLC become normalized, pint sized content sold in little amount of money, it has some backlash, but eventually publisher push it down our throats and it become normalized

in 2012 come microtransaction (which is nothing new to the free mobile market then it came to paid market) had the same backlash when publisher tried how far they can get away with it, several years later they are normalized.

2017 come the year of RNG based real world money lootboxes, and overwatch basically opened the floodgate. whatever and no matter how much downvotes that reddit post get, people will eventually get used to it as every major publisher collude to shove it down our holes and pores, in 2019 even as early as next year, it will be just another part of the AAA gaming industry.

and this is folks, how consumerism destroy.

Season pass are bad too, yeah, but the implication of lootboxes are scary. It will prey on people with mental illness like obsessive compulsive or a gambling addict, especially, they can manipulate the % of the items at wikk according to your spending habit.

Basically, there is nothing stopping them from when you're spending a certain amount, it will actually increase a % of drops, that will give you that rush and say "fuck yeah, the next one i will be even luckier"

So basically, it's like the pigeon peck experiment where pigeon peck at button to get a treat. It will manipulate you when you started getting tired by giving you scraps so you have a refreshed will to continue

They're all bad but season passes are insane. Buying content ahead of time with many times no set release date for the SP content or even idea of what that content entails other than some vague developer notes. People get mocked on here, and rightful so, for preordering games months in advance. Its not different in practice, only cost.

Yes, but you can also get them after the DLC has been released. Typically, a season pass will include the major DLC for a reduced price. Instead of three DLC for $10 each, a season pass might cost $20-25.

Yes, and most of the time, there arent even proof of concept of what the DLC will be.

It is just "yeah! Pay more money for free future content!!! What kind of content you say? We dont know? Hahajahjaha just trust us and throw your money on screeen!!"

Jeez typing that makes me sick

I still have yet to purchase a loot box with real money. There doesn't seem to be any reason to when you can earn them through normal play.

I find it weird because back in the PS2 days no one would have batted an eye over grinding for 40 hours to unlock some new thing, but giving people an option to skip the grind in exchange for real money is evil or something

I see

I've bought a "season pass" exactly once, but I guess it wasn't really a season pass despite being named such since it's was not advertised or implied to include DLC potentially produced later. it was just like, a discount for buying the currently existing DLC as a group instead of individually. I was a little confused when you guys were saying it was really bad when I thought it was basically just bulk purchase DLC <_<

It is not that bad when you already know and they sre being transparent.

For example, witcher 3 came with season pass, and it explicitly said there will 2 expansion sized dlc one smaller and one bigger. The second one will take place in a wholly new location. The same with pillars of eternity. At the very least, you know and have a picture of what youre getting, even it end up not very good (which i think the dlc for those 2 examples arr brilliant)

Then came "triple aaaay" publisher that announced season pass and being all secret secret even no idea what they are gonna make. No what, no when, no info but extra money.

I feel loot boxes wouldn't be so bad if the drop rates weren't so fucking terrible

The fact that Overwatch had to rebalance the amount of money you get for duplicates means that they're aware of it too to an extent

Nintendo is starting to follow suit, however. For the longest time they didn't adhere to any of the bullshit modern gaming was pumping out but with the release of the Switch we saw DLC for Breath of the Wild, and next year their online service will be worth 20 dollars if you wish to buy for the entire year. Nintendo is also in the mobile gaming market now, thanks to the Fire Emblem game and Super Mario Run.

Hope that Nintendo has restraint, but with how absolutely brain dead consumers are I'm pretty sure Nintendo will eventually be just as bad as EA/WB/etc.

Yes, exactly.
We've got about five or ten years of Nintendo being a safe-haven, before they catch up.

Also Switch is getting dogpiled with "shitty indie games" that barely sell elsewhere.

When it comes to DLC/microtransactions; I just make it a point to avoid any new games until the "game of the year" edition comes out, and if I've waited that long, I can wait even longer for it to go on sale. (I don't know how much people paid for them way back when, but I got the complete versions of Skyrim and New Vegas for $15 each.) If for some reason a developer won't release a massively discounted complete version, then I guess I'm not playing that game.

When it comes to lootboxes; I can't really give a fuck when it's just cosmetics, doubly so if it's cosmetics I'm not interested in, and *especially* if the game is free-to-play anyway. If there's a pay-to-win scheme involved, I just don't bother playing the game at all.

Developers can come up with any nickel and dime antics they want, I'm savvy and frugal enough not to fall into those traps, and I have zero qualms about leaving the worst of them to rot. I never fell for the pre-order "bonus" junk way back in the day, and I already knew to wait on PCs games in particular due to expansion packs, these new trends are nothing special or even all that "new".
