This is really really sad but I wouldn't exactly call three people a 'mass' shooting

One of the comments kinda hits home how some folks are nowadays. Makes me wonder how folks are like living in areas of constant conflict.

We're not shocked anymore. And that's frightening.

I believe the FBI definition is 3 or more casualties, excluding the perpetrator.

Just researched a bit more, and it's either >=3 or >=4 casualties depending on the analysis being done.

Considering how rare those deaths are compared to the stuff that will actually kill you, I'm not sure why she would be shocked. Keep in mind that car crashes happen all the time but people aren't so shocked and frightened that they stop driving. Frankly, if people were shocked and appalled about collisions, we might have had driver-less tech a decade ago.

The two widely accepted definitions are either 4+ casualties (FBI) or 4+ injuries. It likely meets the injuries criteria, although it's unclear if it was an indiscriminate act.

Personally for me, it's difficult to be shocked about accidents due to their nature of just being that, accidents. But knowing someone willingly wanted to inflict on others, especially young children, in a "civilized" nation just seems bizarre.

Granted we have shootings all the time in the States but between some culprit simply having a beef with someone else and only going after that person versus someone targeting a large group of strangers, the latter sounds more appalling.

Really? Something that's happened for as long as humans have existed seems bizarre to you? Even in countries without guns, murder is a regular occurrence. Across the world, violence towards children is a regular occurrence. And the idea that you're more likely to murdered by a loved one than a stranger is uncomfortable, but it's certainly not bizarre.

Plus the term "accident" is inappropriate for most collisions. Given that 1/3 of all fatal collisions result from DUIs and another quarter from distracted driving (ie, texting, etc) -- all which require conscious decision -- I hesitate to describe them with a word that diminishes responsibility.

Maybe something being too "close to home" makes it feels more shocking. Take my city for example. Typical suburban city in Los Angeles County with some crimes but murders are almost unheard of.

About two years ago there was a murder about three miles from where I live. In my 22 years of living in this city, this was the first I time I have heard of a murder. Granted I only started paying attention to the news about several years ago.

They completely banned guns in Rwanda.

So the warlords killed 500,000 people - with machetes.

The villagers couldn't fight back , cuz . . . they had no guns.

Not in nearly as high numbers.

The US murder rate is on par with countries like Cuba, Somalia, and Kenya. It is three-to-fifteen times higher than its first-world peers.

1) Nice gun-lobby talking point, but it's not factually accurate. The government banned guns, yes... while at the same time purchasing them in large numbers and distributing them to loyalists. Roughly 100,000 people out of that 500k you mentioned died by firearm.
2) Comparing a third world nation with a history of violence and ethnic strife - and selectively choosing an event in the middle of a civil war, no less - to a stable developed nation is pretty rich to begin with, but hilariously your comparison still falls flat because Rwanda has a lower murder rate than the US. Let that sink in for a minute.

For better or worse I think some of us are simply getting too accustomed to seeing news of that within the States. Zeus is right that killings of all ages occurs throughout the world so in the grand scheme of things, this isn't exactly news. But like I mentioned, for some of us, it is simply getting too frequent and too close to home.
