The majority of the people who make microtransaction purchases are the same small group of people, the group known as "whales" (them and gambling addicts, but they're not mutually exclusive). But they pay so much for microtransactions that they more than make up for the majority of people who don't like them.

It's probably a similar concept as how the anime industry thrives in Japan. It doesn't live on wide market appeal it lives on relatively few people buying a lot of overpriced bull shit.

Of course. GTA V sold the equivalent of 300+ million copies. No single player game could ever come close.
