Mugabe has ruled Zimbabwe with an iron fist. On winning power in 1980 after the country gained independence from Britain, Mugabe moved swiftly to extinguish political opposition. He ordered a violent crackdown that led to a string of massacres in opposition strongholds: The country's Fifth Brigade is believed to have killed up to 20,000 people, mostly supporters of Mugabe's main political rival.
But his hardline policies pushed the country into poverty. Zimbabwe's flourishing economy began to disintegrate after a program of land seizures from white farmers, as agricultural output plummeted and inflation soared.

Accused of rigging elections and quashing any sign of political opposition, Mugabe remains the only leader many in the country have ever known. He once infamously claimed that "only God" could remove him from office.

He faced criticism for throwing a lavish birthday party last year in a region hit by food shortages and drought. But until this week had succeeded in holding off all challenges to his leadership.
UK Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson described him as a power-hungry despot who would not be missed.
"This House will remember the brutal litany of his 37 years in office," he said in the House of Commons in London.

"The elections he rigged and stole, the murder and torture of his opponents, the illegal seizure of land, leading to the worst hyper-inflation in recorded history measured in the billions of percentage points, and forcing the abolition of the Zimbabwean dollar."

A theory is that the army wanna prevent Mugabes power hungry wife from taking over once Mugabe dies. The military has supported Mugabe over the decades, he wouldnt have remained in power otherwise.

Hopefully they take both of them out back and put an end to their tyrannical regime.

I doubt the country will be governed far less tyranical even if that happens. The leader of the military is now in charge and he is apparently a man who has been active in keeping the dictatorship alive. It was the military who committed the atrocities in the name of Mugabe. Dont get me wrong, Mugabe is a monster but Im not convinced the new regime will be much better for the civilian population :(

Maybe they'll change their tune and abandon their communist narratives for once. Otherwise their descent into depravity will just continue.

I remember seeing some news collage image where Mugabe took land away from white farmers and then less than a year later, his country was suffering from starvation and food shortages and begged them to come back lol

I like how of all the awful stuff he did, TC zeroes in on the "stealing from White farmers" bit.

Plunging the entire country into famine and poverty because he wanted to stick it to the whites and steal their land is at the top of the list of awful things he did.

That's how despots gain and hold power.
Blame anyone successful for the woes of others, then take their stuff and distribute it to cronies. After everything inevitability turns to shit, continue to blame those same people and foreign entities for "sabotaging" your great plans, while brutally and publicly crushing any internal dissent. All the while, until you're dead or toppled, claim that everything will turn around soon, if only everyone just sacrifices a little more prosperity and liberty.

Meh colonists took the land to begin with. What actually caused the famine was the new black farmers who were practically slaves prior had no idea what they were doing and even if they were expert farmers no one was going to sell them the fertilizers and equipment required to run a modern farm.

What is worse? Starving due to things in your control or starving due to things outside your control (namely neocolonial meddling and hyper exploitation)

Maybe if the new government is less crappier than the current one, then that will be worth something.

A lot of places in Africa have really improved after somewhat less shitty governments were put in place so fingers crossed for Zimbabwe.

For those who don't know, that bill can be exchanged for 4 US cents. And no, that's not an exaggeration. 10 trillion Zimbabwe dollars is 4 US cents. The highest denomination is 100 trillion dollars which is 40 cents.
