Why do they also have such awful taste in video games? Is it all just delusion? Do you need to convince yourself you still like the games in order to enjoy the porn? I don't get it, you wouldn't think those things are necessarily related.

Well with the recent addition of character creation to the Sonic franchise with Sonic Heroes, there is now a sort of connection as you can make your shitty OCs in-game.

It wasn't just "never really that great." It's been shit since the very first game. How Sonic fans continue to exist perplexes the fuck outta me.

You know, I never knew about the dark side of the Sonic fandom until I saw people talking about it on the internet.

And I never actually see any hate for it - or creepy furry love, for that matter - outside of the internet. I've never met anyone on either extreme; just people who either like Sonic games or don't care for them. I'm tempted to believe this is all just two extremely vocal minorities.

Sonic was kind of fun because it looked nice, it played quickly, the music was great, and the drop in co op in Sonic 2 was fun with a younger sibling or friend. But if you wanted to play it well it could be a confusing clusterfuck

Once it left cartridges and went to 3D, and other games were more common and higher quality, not so much fun

Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed was enjoyable too

All in all a tiny handful of fun games stacked against all of the amazing Mario games. No contest.

There's a huge Sonic following due to branching out into other media (like the many cartoons or comic series) in ways Mario didn't do quite as well. That and... furries. Let's be real

I agree with all this. Sonic (at least classic Sonic) generally beats Mario on the presentation front - more detailed and varied visuals and music, and the fastness looks cool. But Mario soundly wins in gameplay. It's better both for going fast and finding secrets.

Mario obviously doesn't play as fast, but I say it's better at speed because changing your speed is so smooth. Sonic is just too fast for its own good. You go really fast but sometimes you hit some big momentum-killing section. It's too easy to blow past secrets since it's hard to slow down without some kind of obstacle. Starting back up from a stop doesn't always work, even with the spin dash.

The level design in Mario games is very logical. They tend to revolve around a central path but there are plenty of branching areas to keep it interesting, and potential secrets are well telegraphed. Sonic is basically just pick a random path and hope you might find a secret, and if you do, that you don't miss it because you sped past it or didn't have enough speed to make the jump to it. I never feel like I'm actually accomplishing anything with my path choices in Sonic, I just stumble upon shit. Like you said, it's a clusterfuck.

I played Mania.

It was terrible and the only thing those games have going for them is nostalgia. You couldn't go eight steps without hitting an enemy because you were going too fast to see what was ahead of you.

So you have to go slow and the controls are sluggish af. The camera doesn't zoom out to let you see what's in front of you. The only redeeming part of that game was the boss where you had to run to keep up with him. That was the only point in the game where I felt like I had snappy control of Sonic.

Depends the experience I guess. I mean back in the day I liked Sonic games more than Mario. Of course 3D Mario is much more better than 3D Sonic now but Mania is a nostalgic trip it seems.

Sonic 1-3 and Mania are great imo. (Mania is one of the best games this year.)
Mario is definitely the better series though.

Sonic Adventure 1, 2, and Generations are decent games too imo.
However, the best part of the Adventure games were the Chao.
Why can't SEGA make a Chao Garden game?!

Sonic through Sonic and Knuckles is better than all Mario games put together. But that's mostly just because Mario 64 is just that terrible of a game.All the pros from all Mario games are out weighed by the terribleness of Mario 64.
