The Choom Gang was a group of friends at Punahou School in Honolulu in the 1970s who got together to play basketball, surf and smoke marijuana. The group is notable because U.S. President Barack Obama was one of its members. In his 1995 memoir Dreams from My Father, Obama writes about smoking marijuana frequently with the group. Obama has said that he regrets his youthful marijuana use, and as president he has not supported any relaxation in the nation's drug laws.

"To choom" is Hawaiian slang for smoking marijuana (pakalolo). The group called its activity "chooming," and incorporated the word into other contexts. For example, the Volkswagen microbus in which they smoked marijuana was known as the "Choomwagon."

In addition to Obama, members include Mark Bendix - owner of the Choomwagon - and Tom Topolinski. Most members of the Choom Gang were good students and athletes who went on to become successful and productive lawyers, writers and businessmen, writes David Maraniss, author of Barack Obama: The Story,. "The Choom Gang was a bunch of typical high school teenagers, who were out to explore the world, to make it an adventure, to make it fun, to make it funny, and just generally become a family on our own," said Topolinski.

The group enjoyed getting high at the beach or Aku Ponds or a lush hideaway called Pumping Stations. They would park their cars, play loud music on their stereos, smoke marijuana and drink beer. Sometimes, the group would stand under a rock where the water of the Manoa Stream rushed overhead.[2] Favored music included Earth, Wind & Fire, Aerosmith, Blue Oyster Cult, Boston, Kiss, Stevie Wonder, Ohio Players and the O'Jays, said Topolinski.

Rituals and Slang

According to Maraniss Obama created several pot smoking trends for the group, including:[3]

"Total Absorption" or "TA": A technique of long, deep smoke inhalation. Years later, Obama told an interviewer - referencing Bill Clinton's famous statement that he smoked marijuana but "didn't inhale" - that "I never understood that line. The point was to inhale. That was the point." [4]
"Roof Hits": Sucking up the last smoke lingering by the ceiling of a car in which the group had smoked.
"Interceptions": When Obama would take a puff of a joint being passed around, even though it was not his turn.

Ray, the group's drug dealer, was a long-haired hippie who worked at a pizza parlor and lived in a broken-down bus in an abandoned warehouse. Ray was eventually killed with a ball-peen hammer by a scorned gay lover. In his senior yearbook, Obama expressed his gratitude: "Thanks Tut, Gramps, Choom Gang, and Ray for all the good times."
