I'm honestly surprised it was still around. I barely ever heard it mentioned and I can't recall horror fans being that impressed.

They never had many good movies on. Was fun for Halloween though.

it's sad that themed networks are becoming a thing of the past...syfy isn't even all that about horror sci-fi and fantasy anymore

It's network decay. The great cable experiment is winding down it seems. I remember when TLC use to have really good educational stuff on it. Now it's just the freakshow.

i don't really see an all streaming experiment doing any better...there's little to no ad revenue from streaming services

and the shows tend to take longer to produce seasons due to the smaller funds

The sooner that "experiment" falls apart the better off everyone involved will be.

Paying $40 for basic cable and getting fifty channels you'll never watch, means those fifty channels are getting some of the pie.

Paying $9-12 for Netflix, Amazon, or Hulu, and getting five thousand movies or shows you'll never watch, means those five thousand things are getting some of the pie.

Not paying $6-10 for the countless balkanized services out there (and more appearing soon) means you're not paying for stuff you're not going to watch, which means there never was a pie at all.

My cable dropped them already. It's kinda sad, I don't even watch much tv anymore but that was one of the few super-niche channels I actually did watch sometimes. Had a lot of re-runs of good old tv series. Plus they had a lot of overlap w/ Sci-Fi...excuse me... "Siffee," and anything that let me watch the same show w/o giving "Siffee" ratings until they un-stupidify their name was a plus.

If any "basic cable" networked bothered to remember that FCC content restrictions do not apply to cable, at all, maybe the niche channels would still be around.

Well, that kinda fell apart pretty quickly since it went from being just about scifi to also about anime, fantasy, and horror almost immediately (iirc, within a few years they were showing the Record of the Lodoss War OVAs -- at least with Zeiram: the Animation it was a scifi anime) then wrestling and reality tv around 2006

And remember when the History channel showed actual history? Now it's all nonsense about ancient aliens, conspiracy theories, etc.

Hell, take a look at today's schedule:
http://www.history.com/schedule

Midnight to 4am -- Reality tv, with a historical overtone since it concerns swordmarking

4am to 7am - Paid programming

7am - Clash of the Gods: Zeus (I approve), which discusses mythology so that's fine

8am to 12pm - Superheroes Decoded, which discusses the history of superheroes. A bit more pop culture than history, but sure, okay.

12 pm to 11pm - Ancient Aliens. WTF! I thought I was exaggerating a little about this shit.

11pm - Hunt for the Zodiac Killer, which is actual history

So maybe 2 hours of something resembling actual history, another 4 hours of pop culture history, a lot of paid programming, and almost 12 hours of fucking ancient aliens.

Dedicated content streaming is a generally weak idea given individual fees.

To be fair, there are image issues involved. Cable companies generally like being advertiser-friendly and want to appeal to families. HBO gets around this by not bothering with advertisers.
