I have this problem at my gym too. It's always on the top 40 station. I've just learned to mostly tune it out.

"So bring your own music/headphones then."

I know, but I don't even bring my phone with me to the gym to avoid all distractions. I just want to get in, crush my workout and get out. I'm always tempted to skip tracks and find songs that I really like instead of just going all out.

Hmmmm, if I'm going to workout, I'd need some Slipknot or Pantera or something. But I don't work out so....

And dont get me started on WHY U GOTTA BE SO RUUUUUUDE?

That's why you gotta set up a playlist of songs ahead of time that you know will pump you up

The cords get in the way or the gym's PA is so loud I'm now stuck listening to two tracks of music (which is even worse) unless I crank up my volume and that's just annoying. Ironically in the cardio areas the music is quieter so that's when headphones are more applicables.

I too suffer via top 40. Apparently in the afternoon it's some older tracks from the 80s/90s but weekday evenings and all weekend it's the pop stuff.

You don't gotta go to work, work, work, work, work, work, work
But you gotta put in work, work, work, work, work, work, work

The "pick things up and put it down" is from an actual Planet Fitness advertisement. This employee's trying to show some big muscle head (or as they call them, "lunks") all the different equipment they have, and the only thing the big guy is capable of saying is "I pick things up and I put them down" in a Schwarzenegger accent.

It's not just gyms.

It's in most apparel/shoe stores, restaurants, grocery stores, hell, even in hardware/home improvement stores (hear Rihanna and T-Swift on the regular in Menard's & Home Depot).

I'm not asking for death metal or Bay Area thrash, but they can't mix in something that's for music fans and not teenage girls?

The lunk alarm crap and rules that restrict certain excercises really make that place look bad. Like its for people who dont want to get into shape and are offended by people who do.

I just find it hilarious that they advertise as a "judgment free zone", yet their commercials and marketing and the aforementioned "lunk alarm" are quite clearly judging people who take their workouts more seriously and, god forbid, want to use free weights instead of machine-assisted everything.

I think it is just judging the stupid weight lifters. not the normal ones. :v there are a lot of stupid guys who lift weights. the ones who grunt really, really loud so the whole damn gym can hear them and drop their dumbbells on the floor so hard you nearly break the shit and deafen everyone around you.

I HATE them.

Dropping weights is something your should only do in an Olympic style lift which most non-crossfit gyms aren't happy about you doing in the first place. As for the grunting, the 5-10% increase in effort from the grunt can be substantial. If it works for tennis players and shot putters, why not squatters and bench pressers. I have my own home gym and can affirm that grunting works for me.

Your 5-10% increase in effort shouldn't come at the annoyance of everyone else in the gym though. Get your own home gym if you want to sound like an ape.

I did just that as you can read in my last post lol. Some people go to the gym because they want to challenge their bodies to do things which it should not be able to do. I get an adrenaline rush knowing that if I don't grind out that rep and bring it back up, then I'm going to be injured. Fight or flight is a drug to a body builder.

There's no way I can workout without my own music. I broke my headphones walking into the gym one day and turned around and went to the store and bought new ones. The music they play is always shit and would just get me to leave faster

Ironically, you think they are stupid when many of them have their exercise down to a science. They have specific training plan utilizing progressive overload, utilize specific techniques to improve their form as well as strength, and control nutrition to optimize results. They are the ones pressing multiples of their own bodyweight in lifts and making constant progress. They are the dumb ones?

Another solution is to just be like me and never go to the gym

That could work for most I guess...

The gym I used to attend played Hair Nation on XM. I wasn't a big fan but I usually just didn't pay attention and keep track of my lifts. The gym isn't really so much of a social thing. I always want to get in and get out.

People who have their phone or a bluetooth speaker just emitting music from a distance are worse than people who never rerack their weights and supersetters combined.
