I remember from the movie Obi-wan goes to the planet and fights Jango (which is/was a well known bad guy at that point, right?) and he sees that the Clone army was made from his cells AND the alien character told him the army was commissioned by DARTH whoever the fuck.

Like what made them think it would be a good idea to use them as their soldiers?

The clones had Jango's personality traits removed so they would be loyal soldiers (they make a big deal about him having one unaltered clone). The Jedi used them because they were perfect obedient soldiers and an army was needed to fight the droid armies. if you need an army and there's one right in front of you already paid for, ready to go, and will obey your commands, why not use it?
