think about it this way

you go to Africa in a village and ask a guy there what his name means
he can tell you

you go to China and ask a guy what his name means
he can tell you

go to a Native American reservation and ask for the meaning of a guy name
he can tell you

go to a latin country
same thing, can give you the meaning

go to Europe
same thing, can explain what it means

can the same be said of T'Variusness?

if this has some meaning please explain

it is superman's name

also superman was written by some Jewish guys:

Superman's real name is Kal-El, son of Jor-El. The suffix El, of course, means of God in Hebrew, with Kal-El defined by some as Voice of God. Before Krypton's doom, Kal-El's parents put him in a Moses-like basket, sending him down the Nile of intergalactic space until he landed safely on Earth.

I used to work in a predominantly black work place. I worked with this girl from Jamaica, and actually asked her this once, because I was interested in where some of the more obscure names come from. She said "Oh, it's because they're ghetto."

I'm sure this applies to white people as well. White ghetto folk are more likely to give their kids stand out names as well.

I didn't know upper middle class suburbs were ghetto now.

nope

I could care less, I didn't make this thread

someone asked what makes a name weird and I explained it very logically

look across cultures and you see why people are named

1. after an ancestor or myth
2. after some real event or phrase
3. after some object like a tool for instance

you could probably find more reasons but they will all share one thing

real meaning and real words

though for instance the spelling can change

like a guy named after a brick could be brik or brieck

but a brick is a real thing and real word

Here's a defense. Who gives a fuck? It's not like people of a darker color skin have a monopoly on weird names. Weird is a matter of perspective for these types of things anyway, like when people say you have a funny accent or prepare your hot dog strangely. Not in your home city you don't.

This is like when people mock Ebonics as if all white people speak some common, regal tongue in America.

As long as the name can be said by most people, it's fine with me. That's like the point of a name. As a reference to someone.

I mean, I get what your point is, I just don't really agree with it. I'm African, im well aware that names can have meaning. I have multiple middle names that mean multiple different things, and that's fine. I also think it's fine that a name can mean nothing except for it just being used to refer to someone.

If you want to say a name is weird because it's not a word or a reference to a fictional character that's fine.

I just don't necessarily think that's a bad thing I guess. But maybe you don't mean "weird" in a negative way?

Using your own example of T'Variusness. The name becomes fine if it was just "Variousness" but because of the "T'" it's now weird. To me it makes no difference.

If you are in the native chocktow community and meet someone named Poloma

you would know what their name means or could look it up, ask an elder

if the parents make up T'Variusness and say it means this

other than asking those parents or relatives etc, how would you figure out the meaning?

someone named Kal-El, you could look it up
you could extrapolate it

no I was just explaining in reference to the title of this thread

if parents want to name their kid as such without using a word that has meaning or is a real word

as you said fine

but to act like it is not weird is another thing

of course people will wonder, where that name came from

when someone hears Kal-El, they might think it odd to be named after a comic book character, but they at least know where it came from

they are both weird, but one has more meaning

obviously if parents named their kid Outback Steakhouse that probably means the parents loved Outback Steakhouse

but D'Brickashaw, what can you get from that?

also, what makes Outback Steakhouse weird is the culture it exists in doesn't usually name kids after franchises

what makes D'Brickashaw weird is that it breaks naming conventions across cultures

the bold part is key

as in it was taken from something already existing

that is all I am arguing

if D'Brickashaw existed outside of the parents mind, then that is fine

and guess what? now it does and people named this will be named after the previous person named D'Brickashaw

but then what if another parent makes up a new name like T'shimshalamstri

arguing it is not weird just doesn't make sense, do it if you want though

one mentioned ITT

https://www.behindthename.com/name/barkevious/submitted

A modern invented name of unknown meaning.
In the case of American football player Barkevious Mingo, his unusual first name was created by his mother, Barbara, by adding the first three letters of her name to a name she liked, Kevious.

Kevious is not found btw

I'm not going to lie & say that those black names that are clearly mostly a random jumble of syllables aren't weird, but it's not hard to understand WHY they exist. Black Americans have have spent of their existence being viewed as outsiders to 'White America', & would like to have their own culture. Some got the idea of "reconnecting" with their roots, but the hard reality is that any connections they had have been long since lost, & the best they can do is throwing together some random sounds they think approximate to something vaguely African, or at least sufficiently removed from the culture that's been marginalizing them for so long.
