The free market is about to end fossil fuels / oil dependency. Should be fascinating to see what the unbridled power of new investment into renewables can achieve in our lifetime. --- they shall be the first ones against the wall when the revolution comes - averagejoel ... Copied to Clipboard!

To be clear, it's the government choosing to do this, not the free market.

A government run fund dumping shittons of stock, thus causing the prices to tank, is pretty much the opposite of "free market". This is blatant manipulation.

Other than the fact oil is made into millions of different things, surely this will end them. I cant wait for us to get away from fossil fuels as an energy source but anyone thinking this will end the oil companies is hilarious. Greatest feedstock humans have ever found. Period.

A government run fund dumping shittons of stock, thus causing the prices to tank, is pretty much the opposite of "free market". This is blatant manipulation. They're diversifying their position because they know that the free market is moving towards prioritizing electric vehicles and renewable energy sources. Solar, for example, now employs more people in America than coal, oil, and gas combined. And they're trying to get investors on board. IE leveraging the power of profit to push society towards cleaner and cheaper energy sources. A movement to divest and reinvest elsewhere is part of the free market. It represents people deciding where to put their money. --- they shall be the first ones against the wall when the revolution comes - averagejoel ... Copied to Clipboard!

Do you think the US should have a sovereign wealth fund? Hell yeah. Something like the Alaskan Permanent Fund. In 2015, the Alaskan Permanent Fund gave every resident of Alaska $2,000 in cash. It's gone down in recent years but it has a consistent record of giving citizens around $1,000 per year. It counts for each child you have too, IIRC. Each state should set up a fund and the federal government should set up a fund. As the economy grows, the accounts can grow too. --- they shall be the first ones against the wall when the revolution comes - averagejoel ... Copied to Clipboard!

Antifar posted...Do you think the US should have a sovereign wealth fund? The federal government makes a lot of money each year. It could invest a larger amount than individual states could. Which would represent more interest and higher dividends. This could be a great strategy for moving towards a universal basic income. --- they shall be the first ones against the wall when the revolution comes - averagejoel ... Copied to Clipboard!

This isn't exactly a good headline for this news. Also Norway isn't even claiming to be doing this in the name of the environment so suggesting that this is related to the divestment movement on college campuses is ridiculous.
