Single player was fun, game is overall better than it's prequel, and they completely removed the P2W aspect

Been playing since release, and it's officially overtaken Battelfield 1 as my go to FPS game

it's a fun casual shooter
it's not gonna win any awards for its generic campaign and it's not going to be played competitively, but the sound design and visuals are top notch and make you feel like you're in a star wars movie
the lootboxes are bad, but not because of any pay2win aspect or because of randomization, but because mechanics shouldn't be locked behind progression. numerical advantages are an issue, but outside of specific cards honestly you'd never feel the disparity

so like, 7/10?

The game itself is really good, that unfortunately is held back by the grinding system. They removed the pay 2 win aspect, but we're still left with a ridiculously complicated system that still rewards people who play more rather than play better imo

That said, I'm enjoying the game a lot.

I feel like the heroes feel better to use. I also am finding that i'm not liking the guns quite as much overall, but the maps are of higher quality. The space battles are just flat out fun, the flying is a blast. The campaign is solid 5 missions in also. I'm happy with my purchase, solid 8/10 for me.

the two big things that directly address problems the first one had are classes and reinforcements
the 4 classes have different amounts of HP and different loadouts. they've spread out different kinds of star cards, so that people can't do it all. for instance, the shield that was popular in the first game is now on the specialist. the heavy class has a front facing shield as well, and the officer has the squad shield. there are other star cards that have been spread out, like different classes getting specific grenades

reinforcements are cool. instead of randomly picking up a powerup for a vehicle or a rocket launcher, you can earn points in game based off of your score and purchase them in the respawn menu. this could be anything from an at-st to a rocket trooper (so no more spamming jetpacks around the map), to a hero

ships have really improved, probably because DICE didn't even work on them

I'm holding off on it until Christmas probably. I loved the first one, played the hell out of it and the Season Pass up until before Rogue One, then got hooked to Skyrim (never played it before so I got the Ps4 remaster) and played the CoD4 remaster as well.

Mediocre game that only "improves" on the first one by adding a very short campaign and more maps

Question for anyone that has it: Is there a big enough difference between "vanilla" classes (having no upgrades or Star Cards) and classes that have one or more decent upgrades?

And for those that got the Deluxe edition, I know the Deluxe edition has p2w upgrades for each class and already gives you a big advantage, but is that extra $20 really worth it?

honestly, not really. i'm like level 4 in some classes that I consistently hit top 3 in the match, while some teammates are like level 22
there's obviously an advantage, but there's so many other variables that star cards are just one of a few things

Basically, yes, but it is not huge. The upgrades serve to make you more effective at what you are already doing. A couple unlock new weapons or abilities, but they are so situational that it's not going to give you a huge advantage. For example, the Specialist can swap out their Flash Grenade for a Poison Gun (that has horrible range and low damage) or a Shotgun (that has horrible range and damage, but can knock guys over). The one you use depends entirely on your play style and set up.

Essentially, it's not going to let you do things you couldn't do before, but they are going to let you do the things you already do much better.

My take on the Single Player campaign:

Things I liked:
- Good writing. It feels like a Star Wars story, and it fills in a little backstory about the collapse of the Empire. The characters and plot felt more coherent than what we got in Episode 7. There was some SW humor there (like, light situational jokes), but I didn't see any ridiculous out-of-place fan service comments just for the sake of stoking up the nostalgia fires. I'm not gungho hardcore SJW, but I think it's crazy they wrote a normal, down-to-earth yet strong female character and no one seems to be really saying anything about that online.
- Healthy combination of ground and vehicle (both ground and starfighter) combat.
- Getting kills in the game is just satisfying... Except for one enemy type that just disappears when you kill it, but that's only in one part of one level.

Things I didn't like:
- I do wish they focused more on the main character instead of trying to shoehorn in a lot of the other, better known Star Wars characters. I don't know if they did *that* for fan service or if they did it to showcase off all the abilities you can use online with the different Hero characters.
- It's short. And the ending is just... kind of there. I don't know if they're going to expand on it or not.
- Dogfight levels can be kind of frustrating. And there's not a lot of dogfighting in them. In fact the more you dogfight the more likely you are to just die, so you kind of have to just rush through them.
- The main character has way too many abilities... you can usually re-arm/re-equip what you want at the beginning of each level when you play as her, but I was still kind of confused when I'd go to throw a grenade and... some weird lightning effect would happen and I'd realize the grenade wasn't equipped any more because the game doesn't save your load-outs between levels >_>.

About the multiplayer...
I also really enjoy it, though that's not to say there aren't glitches (check out the StarWarsBattlefront subreddit to see what sort of fun times people have encountered). Honestly I think the worst I've run into though is some minor lag, and servers emptying out after a few matches, forcing you to exit out and find another match which is just a tad annoying when the "empty" server only needed three more players to start again.

The gameplay itself is solid. The three objective based game modes (Galactic Assault, Starfighter Assault and Strike) all have stories to tell on their levels, and no two levels really play out the same. They did an awesome job making you feel like you're a part of a Star Wars battle actually working towards an objective, instead of just telling you to capture some flags or destroy some comms unit that's in a random location. The other two modes are basically TDM (Heroes vs Villains which is 4 versus 4 and Blast, regular soldiers only, which is 10 vs 10).

The inevitable "but" here is the progression system... Right now, the credits you get from a match come from time played in the match, not even what your score is. So you'll see a lot of people actually AFKing it. You'll also encounter the problem that some game modes are inherently more lucrative than others (Galactic Assault yields a fair amount of credits, while Starfighter Assault gives barely any based on what I've seen). And then you're stuck opening random loot crates for random classes/vehicles/heroes... it's just really unsatisfying.
You *do* unlock weapons and weapon mods by using the appropriate class and weapon, which is GREAT. .... BUT, there are only 3 unlockable weapons per class currently, and each only has three mods to add (you can have 2 mods equipped at a time). So ... it's not like there's anything crazy yet.

They do talk about adding customization and more unlocks in December, I'm curious to see what they release but I don't have high hopes.

gdi I didn't realize this topic was 3 days old >_>.

Once you get used to a playstyle for each class, multiplayer can be damn fun. The class system is effective and the card system is a huge improvement over the first Battlefronts.

Unfortunately, it's a game that will be damned because of the loot crate system. It improved on a lot from the first game, and they delivered on a lot of what people asked for, including what I feel like is a very fun and diverse campaign. Had EA not been so selfish, this could have been a big success, now I predict that they will hold back on more content because of how the community reacted overall and aren't very driven to expand as they had intended.

People were quick to complain about it as a whole, but bullshit EA business practices aside, the gameplay is actually a lot of fun. I'm especially loving the space battles, probably on account of being much better at them than the normal battles.

The progression is atrociously slow past the first few levels though. When you do save up your credits for a crate, you usually come away feeling like you wasted your time and should have just kept saving for a hero. And the daily login crates are more of an insult than an incentive.

My biggest issue with it at the moment is that it will suffer the same failings as most other MP-focused games. There's offline content, but it still feels like a token gesture. I hear its a bigger, shinier token than was offered in their last game, but still...

At this rate, i can't help but feel i will still be playing the original BF2 long after my patience has worn thin with this one. But for now, there is definitely fun to be had.

I came pretty close to doing the same thing tbh... It was just like pure luck :\ I don't know why it's so difficult to break locks and crap in dogfights in this game. Even when I think I'm being a badass dodging through asteroids and going through space stations and shit I still wind up getting shredded.
