are self-help books legitimate or just a way of fooling gullible people into buying something that doesn't help them?

Post your reasoning for your answer itt.

As for me, I believe in them. Not all of them, but some of them have legitimate advice. Stuff like Rich Dad, Poor Dad is ok. Think and Grow Rich isn't.

Like everything, some are legit, some are BS. I try to avoid ones with philosophies like "just tell yourself everyday you're awesome and you'll BE awesome!". Positive talk is good, but it's just a band-aid if you're in a shitty place mentally.

I really loved Seven Habits of Highly Effective People. It's about improving yourself first and foremost, and then goes on to improve your social skills. I've received a lot of positive remarks from people after I've tried following the advice in the book, from friends and from managers/supervisors at work.

They can definitely be helpful. Some people just need guidance, especially in this day and age.

We all need hope and to live for some kind of purpose. Self help can help guide us towards those things.

That's not self-help, that's help. There is no such thing as self-help. If you did it yourself then you didn't need help.
