I've found that golden bullets are less reliable than some 30 some odd year old ammo that's been sitting god knows where.

I use Remington UMC JHP for personal defense. It's good bang for your buck. I lol @ the suckers who buy hyper ammo. Tried a couple. I remember that one of them, Sig Sour's v-crown caused the only malfunctions my Glock 43 has ever had. And I only fired like 60 rounds. Remington UMC? Hundreds of rounds, not a single malfunction.

I buy Federal HST for 40c a round for carry and it tests better than anything. I have some of the HTP remington just because they were like 5 bucks a box after a rebate, but I don't get why people pay $1/round (they don't know any better).

I'm not some chump who has to shoot people with 115gr ball ammo. I have hollow points too.

Though I have to admit the technology behind some of those hyper rounds (like xtreme defender, g2 RIP) is interesting and makes me wish I could buy them just to mess around with them. The wound cavity in some of those rounds is pretty sick.

oh those RIP rounds have been proven bullshit.

I thought you mean hyper expanding, which HST is supposed to be.

Underwood Extreme Penetrators are pretty bad ass though, but not for anything I'll ever use them for

Oh I did mean those rounds too. But I'm just noting some of the more extreme ones that seem like fun to use on specific targets. The RIP ones are that bad? Lucky Gunner's results for it weren't bad. At least not from what I can tell. Decent pentration and a spread out wound channel.

Edited: Eh that's probably a dumb question. As far as I'm aware it's only certain special types of ammo that have lower recoil.

What would you recommend for a good SD 9mm round for a 3-inch barrel?

speer gold dot 124gr or federal hst 147gr

there is a dude on youtube that tests out of short barrels (ammo quest?), those usually come out the best. As far as flip, I think 147gr is usually softer than 115gr typically, unless the 115gr is loaded really low pressure.

I'm basing my conclusion on the RIP rounds on TNT outdoors test. As long as HST are .40c a round that is what I carry though. I've never seen a test come out bad with them, and they aren't screaming hot either (I have some 147gr +p HST too they are a little hot but I tend to shoot those out of my cz compact).

I'll check that out. Have you checked out Lucky Gunner's tests?

https://www.luckygunner.com/labs/self-defense-ammo-ballistic-tests/

Very useful and he has it organized so you can easily check the expansion, penetration and velocity of many rounds in a convenient table. He also shoots out of short barrel handguns.

Yeah I've browsed through lucky gunner before, I know TNToutdoors9 personally so I kinda am biased his way though. I see he likes the HST 147gr as well.
