Really good.
I recommend watching the original adaptation first. People like to shit-talk it because it doesn't follow the manga, but it's a good show on its own merit and it handles the early parts better. No, read the Manga, there are things you'll miss watching either anime that you'd get out of the books. But if you really want to watch anime, Brotherhood is canon, therefore superior.

Eh, I didn't really like Brotherhood as much because it has such a different atmosphere compared to the first FullMetal Alchemist anime.

The end of the first one was fucking awful. The movie made it even worse. Those two things alone make it inferior. It's also missing the best homunculus. Greed is much better in Brotherhood as well

It you have time and really like heavy intrigue and attention to mood, watch both. Both series are excellent in their own right. If you just want the plot, watch brotherhood.
