Looking back on that, and after learning some of my folks "REAL" thoughts on certain things, that was quite fucked up.

Instead of investigating the issues and forming an opinion for myself I just went with the flow and tried to be on the same "team" as my family.

It's not until you live by yourself out in the real world for a while, and meet other people in different situations than yourself that you realize just how fucked up the GOP is.

In a former life they were my team. After that I was split and though that there were "good" republicans and "good" democrats.

Now I'm a firm believe that there are ZERO "good" republicans and anyone who would willingly associate with that hate group is either malicious or ignorant beyond belief. I have no respect for anyone like that.

How often did you vote while growing up?

Only in the presidential elections at first.

Nowadays I vote in every damn election I can.

When I was a teenager, I was a libertarian

When I started college, I was a reluctant Republican

In 2008, I grit my teeth and voted for Obama

When I finished college, I was a centrist Democrat

In 2012, I voted for Obama enthusiastically

When I started working and paying taxes, I moved moved center-left

In 2016, I was a Bernie supporter first, and later an enthusiastic Hillary supporter

These days I sit comfortably left of center and I don't agree with my family on anything.

I like the economic ideologies of Republicans. But the fact is, they are rarely actually implemented by the representatives we put into office. And unfortunately, most Republican candidates are very socially conservative. Libertarians are all too extreme. I wish there was a socially moderate / fiscally right leaning party I could vote for. Some social policies are OK. I'm not against some kind of social healthcare for example. A system where decent public healthcare and excellent private healthcare can co-exist would be ideal IMO (I think the ACA was the first step toward this).

So did I until I saw who McCain's running mate was. I like McCain but in 2008 I feared what would happen if he died in office and Palin became president. That is when I realized the issues mattered to me more then the party.

Voting Republican isn't wrong. You can be economically in favour of Republicans, which a lot of people are. Unfortunately, there's a lot of baggage that comes with that.

I've heard stories of families split apart over political leanings. Such a hotbed issue. If you took the time to learn and appreciate what each side offers to the political landscape, then you did more homework than most other people.

mine does think Trump can be an idiot, but he also buys into the whole "the establishment hate him"
he flip flops on the GOP, whether they're trying to do good or whether they're a bunch of crooks. he also thinks everyone who hates Trump should just "give him a chance"

I like Kasich, and I'd argue Mitt Romney is a decent human being.

I still consider myself a republican, but I'd never vote for Trump and think there is definitely a difference between "Trump republicans" and others.

How bat-shit insane and completely self-unaware. We've got a significant portion of the country at this point that thinks "Everyone who disagrees with me is a racist bigoted hateful Nazi" is actually a reasonable worldview.
