I just turned on my Gameboy yesterday for the first time in years and discovered that my Pokemon Red save file still exists. I've read a lot about how the internal battery would be dead by now and my save file would be gone... but that's not the case. Am I just lucky? Have I been storing the cartridge in some way that preserves the battery longer? Does this battery not die? Cuz I also tried my Pokemon Silver, and that one's dead.

I believe my Red is still intact, but my Gold died a few years ago. :( Went to play Stadium 2 with a friend and made the discovery. I had all 251 Pokemon on that thing at Lv 100.

My R/B/Y save was still good when I checked a year or two ago, but G/S save files were gone. So I bought some batteries to replace them.

RBY are a tad more durable because they dont need to maintain the internal clock. They do eventually die.

Replacing the battery is really easy though. Some say you need a soldering iron but I pulled it off in highschool with an xacto knife and electrical tape.

Yes. Some good tape will hold the battery in place.

And the battery is just something we can easily order on eBay/amazon? I don't know if I can just as easily get back into "gen 1&2 mechanics" though.

You can find the battery in a radio shack. Its a common watch battery, or something similar to one.

If you wanted to you could read a tutorial, buy the supplies, and replace the battery in like 2 hours.

Only real trouble will be opening the cartridge. Youll need a special screw driver that you can find online. I was fine jerry-rigging it open with a knife and pliers, but I was young and was more interested in experimenting than preserving the cartridge.

It still turned out fine, but if you want to play it safe you should research how to open it.

I believe that though you can replace the battery, doing so will still erase your save data.

So your old squad may be doomed either way, unless you can find a way to store them off-cart.

Nintendo did it first with the original LoZ, which coincidentally was the first console game ever to have save state (everything prior was passwords).

That's basically what I did for g/s/c never needed to do it to the original games, not that I can find red anyways.

Easier to just buy the virtual console pokemon on 3ds. Either way your gonna start over. Might as well do the way that doesn't make you do cartridge surgery
