get an AR or if you live in a shit state get a mini-14. PSA is currently having some crazy cheap deals on starter kits if you want to build (they also bundle magazines in with other items if you want to save a lot of money on that as well) or go the ruger ar556/S&W sport II if you want entry level prebuilt ones. if you want to step it up then go colt or spikes tactical. a little more ($1200) can also get you a BCM or Danial Defense which will be great if you intend to jump into Afghanistan to play captain america and want something that can take a beating and last you forever. i wouldn't spend any more than that for an AR though.

personally id recommend the fallowing that has a nice mix of quality and price--
http://palmettostatearmory.com/psa-16-m4-premium-carbine.html - PSA's premium line have cold hammer forged barrels which are chrome lined so they can take some abuse and are about $100-150 cheaper than colts version which are basically the same thing.

with that either get this--

or this-

with that you get a rifle, sight and mags. they also have a deal on ammo. federal 55gr for $250/1000rds after rebate which is also a great deal. so for around $1000-1200 you can get everything.
