Fell into a vat of toxic waste that bleached his skin, dyed his hair, and drove him insane. He was chased into the vat as a member/leader of the Red Hood Gang.

The most famous one is that he was an engineer at Ace Chemicals before quitting his job to work as a stand-up comic. He's an utter failure as a stand-up comic though and his wife is pregnant, so he takes a job from some crooks who want to break into a playing card factory that's next door to Ace. Right before the heist, he's informed that his wife and unborn child were killed in a household accident. The crooks refuse to let him quit the job and he's forced to don the Red Hood (the crooks have a different person wear it every time to avoid suspicion). Unfortunately, the police and Batman interfere and the guy dives into a vat of chemicals to escape from him.

Buuuuuut the Joker then states in this same story that he remembers his past "one way and sometimes another" and that if he has to have a past, he prefers it to be multiple choice.

There's been seven or eight of them so far, and apparently there's now three Jokers for some reason.

It's almost always the vat of chemicals Red Hood thing. Like you can "he has no true origin it's a mystery" all you want, but it still repeatedly comes back to the vat of chemicals in most comics and adaptations.

Well, the idea is that he's always the Red Hood falling into a vat of chemicals, it's just how he got there that's different.

That's his origin but we still know almost nothing about him.

"a gangster fell into some chemicals and went insane" is not an origin. Two face has a similar origin (same chemicals too iirc) except it exploded instead of he fell in, but only half his body was exposed.

But we know much more about him and who Harvey Dent used to be.
