This has happened in almost every college course I've taken: first half of the semester has cliques in class, usually people who already know each other or whoever sits around the extremely extroverted student. Everyone else is typically quiet or only socialize in the class. Then a few weeks before the semester ends, everybody opens up, you start hanging out after class, and start to form friendships.

Going through that hardcore now: was using my downtime between classes to do homework or dick around, now I find myself socializing and wishing "shit man, wish we hung out more since day 1".
