Great result. Doesn't include GOG or Xbox/Windows Marketplace.

Combined it hit a million two weeks after launch

So it's probably past the 2 million mark by now?

I wanted to wait for a price reduction or a sale before buying it, but I caved once a friend bought it and I played multiplayer with him. Had to have it at that point.

That's beautiful

Hopefully developers learn from the success of a game made by the blood sweat and tears of the guys who made that game. Gamers recognize quality, especially nowadays with how popular stuff like Lets Plays and Twitch are getting, if it's a good game people will see it.

Unfortunately a lot of great games do get overlooked. The artstyle for Cuphead made it stick out in a huge way. That was a great move.

Nah I definitely agree, but I do feel like more than ever good games are getting better recognition, especially ones that aren't exactly made by big name developers.

That's what happens when a game journalist goes viral over not understanding a simple tutorial.

Strange, because I've never heard of it until the tutorial on how to get a job making $100k a year being a game journalist.

It was shown off during Xbox E3 conferences IIRC. The cartoon style made an impact. It was originally just gonna be a boss fight game but it got delayed for a long time.

Which E3 was this? I don't think I actually saw such a thing during the potentially lethal E3 drinking game.

I dunno, these guys got lucky. They had to go through all sorts of self-inflicted financial strain to get this game out, like remortgaging their houses and shit.

Stardew Valley had a stressful development story. It paid off there too.

But it does make me think of all the stories out there where it doesn't work out. Spending 2-5 years on a game that might not make its money back must be so damn scary for these indie devs and I'm sure it happens constantly.

Your ignorance of the game obviously isn't the norm then. Happy for them though.

Must've been massively overshadowed by all the other indie ports they announce each year for every console.

It wasn't? As I said there has been hype for Cuphead for years. It was the indie game marketed the most by Microsoft.

I tried to find it on first top ten highlight xbox things or whatever to look forward to on Verge (first thing to come up) and I can't find anything on the game. So it must not have been in the actual conference or it was indeed forgettable with a cult following.

Oh it was 2014

http://4playernetwork.com/blog/2014/06/e3-2014-cuphead-is-a-new-indie-title-for-the-xbox-one/

During Microsoft's E3 conference, a montage was shown to display several new Indie titles coming to the Xbox One. Out of the games shown, one really stood out, not only because of the name, but also because of the visual style.

Cuphead is being developed by StudioMDHR via the ID@XBOX program. This game is advertised as a "Run and Gun & Fighting Game Hybrid" with handdrawn and inked visuals to recreate the look of a 1930's cartoon. From what little gameplay there is, it seems Cuphead is divided into several timed stages with the goal being to defeat all enemies on screen.

Personally, I grew up on Looney Tunes, so I'm a sucker for any game that recreates old, handdrawn cartoons. Be on the look out for Cuphead when it releases sometime in 2014.

Then it popped up in each E3 conference after that.

Seriously it was known way before that journalist fail video. That artstyle made an impression.
