What is your main motivation for working out

You probably have multiple reasons for working out, but which is your main motivation?

Competition. Looks and health, while they matter to me, are secondary perks. Eating a lot and competing aren't healthy (I tore my bicep earlier this year) and I don't always look good when bulking up.

That pretty much falls in the "being able to perform certain activities" category I'd think

When I do work out, it's usually because I want to feel good and have more energy.

I thought about adding those two as a category, but I decided against it. I felt it was close enough to "being healthy", but maybe I was wrong.

Primarily sports performance, as I play in competitive basketball and ice hockey leagues. But I also enjoy the confidence and feel good boost from a good workout.

Health, self esteem and feeling good. However my main motivation was because when I had no self esteem I allowed myself to be used by an abusive gold digger. She was a psycho who despite being fat thought she was an 11/beauty who always put down others for how they looked etc. I gained weight after the break up due to depression. Then one night I decided I was going to get in shape basically as spite.

Now I am in the best shape of my life and someone who still has contact with her showed me a recent pic and she is OBESE now so I feel great.

One is to look good
The other is to feel good.

Bulking/Cardio generates a lot of positive emotions for me, despite my hatred for both.

-I'm a gay male
-Boyfriend likes the muscles
-I'm a registered nurse and witness daily why bothering to lift weights to maintain physical independence is not a laughing matter...

Basically if you're a fat fuck with noodle limbs in your youth and never bother to change any of that after age 50, have fun spending 65+ in an uncomfortable wheelchair or even a bed because that's where you're headed (incontinence too). Walkers and canes are for the old people who actually took up daily exercise mid-life to avoid a wheelchair. Most seniors who are 70-90+ and are still mobile without equipped assistance were at least marginally athletic the majority of their lives (no phase of obesity after age 21, no diabetes, etc).

You want to be able to keep physically independent as an old man up to at least age 90 and stave off a bunch of crippling conditions that make life miserable? Exercise. Daily. With luck, you can even survive that long on a shitty diet; you just have to make sure you get off your ass and break a sweat once a day. Keeping a weight lifting regimen is key for an average man to "age gracefully".

For the health that's another part. My paternal grandpa lived to 94 (died 2014). Until he was 93 he walked 3 miles a day, up and down hills. He lived near a Saltwater State Park and walked there every day rain or shine. He also did calisthenics including push ups for a long time, I think he stopped doing the push-ups sometimes in his early/mid 80s though. But I remember when he took me and my brother to Sun Lakes in Eastern Washington, he led my brother and I in doing 25 push ups in the morning as part of his routine, which I could barely do. (sorry, went on my own old man tangent then). He had a series of strokes at 93 and died at 94. But he was active and totally cognizant of his surroundings until his first stroke then it was a quick loss of function.

My maternal grandmother had lymphedema, was obese and had type 2 diabetes. She stopped being totally mobile in her late 50s. She was partially mobile until she was about 75 and died at about 85? Starting when I was about 10 she would have me drive her the 300 yards or so to her youngest son's, my uncle, house.
