Was Final Fantasy 1 your first Final Fantasy game?

This is something I've been wanting to do for awhile now. As someone who has played through all the main series FF games (besides FF13 2 and 3), I've kinda wanted to just do a series of topics about each one, discuss the games with everyone on CE, what our favorite parts are, least favorite, ask if it still holds up today, etc.

Your responses/comments/questions don't have to be as structured as I'm doing it, but for some reason this is just what I wanted to do. LOL

First Final Fantasy or Not? First JRPG?

Final Fantasy 1 was my first FF game, and my first JRPG. At the time I had no idea what a "JRPG" was, my best friend and I just knew this game was AWESOME and we wanted to beat it. We took turns on his NES (I was a Sega kid) just trying different things and trying our best. His dad was AWESOME and yet a heretic at the same time. He literally tore apart the Official Nintendo Guide page by page, and would only give us a page once we showed him that we already passed that part of the game. He wanted us (at like, 6) to beat the game legit, but would let us see the stuff we missed so we could go back if necessary.

Favorite Sequence and Least Favorite Sequence in the Game

Obviously upgrading your class was the best part of the game. You meet this boss ass dragon who basically tells you to go prove your strength. We did it because we wanted to impress this dragon, not knowing what it would do. The reward? Becoming AWESOME! So cool, something I still miss in a lot of RPG's now. That physical showing of progress was just really rewarding. The quest itself was interesting in the sense that you were doing something outside the narrative of the plot. We both thought that it was strange that he wasn't asking us to defeat a Fiend or anything like that. "Go get this thing and bring it back."

Least favorite portions were anytime you had to walk through something that caused the screen to flash and you took constant damage. Was it the Gurug Volcano or something? So annoying. It was also REALLY annoying you couldn't just buy a lump sum of an item. If you wanted 50 potions, be ready to press that damn button a crap ton. And the slide puzzle in the water, cause I suck beans.

Rating out of 10 and does it still hold up?

Overall NOW I would give it a 6.5/10. It it still a solid game in terms of progression, the basic mechanics of the game are strong (obviously outdated now), and it tells some neat individual stories. It lacks a really good narrative thread beyond the twist at the end though, and most of the villains just kinda existed to BE villains, they didn't have a lot of background info.

Does it still hold up? If someone asked me today do they NEED to play Final Fantasy 1, no. What it did was revolutionary for the time, but at the same time you can just watch any number of Youtube videos explaining the history of it and what it did to move the genre forward instead of putting in the 20+ hours. It's fine, but it's not a must play.

Not my first FF, not my first JRPG, and i barely remember anything of that game besides the broken corner in the starting continent that spawned enemies way way higher than you that let you grind, and the class ups, i'd give it a 5/10 honestly.

Not my first FF or JRPG.
Got a free code with Dissidia for the PSP version a few years back. I never actually bothered to finish it as it just felt too barebones coming from the later installments.

When you said four fiends the first group i thought of was the 4 fiends of FF4, not 1, i didn't even remember FF1 had four fiends, and i looked them up and they're not even that memorable...

People aren't quite that old here, I'd imagine the first somewhat common answer will be IV, which was mine, and then spike at 7

Not to mention that FF wasn't really a thing outside of Japan and the US the first decade of its existence.

That's part of the reason I want to do this, just to see how people first approached Final Fantasy and what memories they have of each of them.

Yeah, FF4 was my first FF game and jrpg.

I don't really care for the original FF much. I played it way later and I just don't think it holds up well. I might have liked it more as a kid, dunno.

Hell, depending on how young they are, they maybe have the FF1 for Android/IOS

Go play one of the remakes. The NES one is full of coding errors.
