I like any speed run where they don't completely skip the game by exploiting glitches. Short glitches to circumvent little stuff is fine, but when you jump right to the final boss and beat a game that takes hours in under 15 minutes, I just shrug and walk away.

whoa.

speedrun.com says your runs will take 1-3 weeks to be verified.

I submitted mine and it was put online within like 3 hours >_>

I'm assuming that was done by the record holder himself

Well, that, too, I suppose. I was thinking more that the first time I heard of the speed-running community, there wasn't a lot of variation in types of speed run, so the only SM64 time was the one where you glitched under the Bowser door and won in like 7 minutes. They made 120 stars an option soon after (I've never gotten all 120), and now 75 is far more prevalent, but I was severely disappointed when the expectation was to just cheat the door as fast as possible and that was it.

If not for that, I probably would have gotten into speedrunning back when I first found out about it. I used to speedrun the games I owned well before it was an internet phenomenon. When your parents only bought you one game for your birthday and one for Christmas, you learned to play the shit out of the ones you had. I could beat SML2 in about 30 minutes, PC shareware games like Commander Keen and Duke Nukem in 5, and I played Link's Awakening every time I was on a long trip because it took me almost exactly the same length as the ride. (That one was not optimized, considering it took me 3 1/2 hours.) I was also a big time Mario Kart 64 player and did rush Super Mario 64 from time to time. Leveling characters unassisted in World of Warcraft was an occasional passion, as well.

But I was really put off when I would look at the records for some of these and the times posted were absolutely absurd. Ocarina of Time beat in 17 minutes? Where's the fun in that? That's not beating the game! That's beating the final boss and seeing the credits. If I wanted that, I'd load my save game at the very end. The WoW leveling was probably the final straw for me, when the internet was hailing Athene for using exploits and power-leveling to get to 70 in under a day.

I'm grateful that the community recognizes more than just Any % runs today. However, I'm no longer so interested in dedicating myself to one game to optimize how I run it when I've got a massive backlog and plenty of old games to come back to for nostalgia, and I don't sit inside my room and play video games for all my waking hours any more. That ship has sailed. I'd probably be very active if I had gotten into it 15 years ago, but my interests no longer align. I just watch interesting runs when they're put before me now.

A lot of old speedrunning sites banned glitches. Though due to the constraints of recording many of them were segmented runs for longer games. The issue of what was a glitch vs. a shortcut made a few decisions seem arbitrary.

I do agree that runs with major "game breaking" glitches are boring. Pokemon Red/Blue no longer has an any% category because of this.

my run is a testament to how far the game is from optimized. first few levels are downright embarrassing. killed it in the end though.

and, sub-21! the record was 21:08. I figured I'd beat the record before I got sub-21, but ended up getting 20:58 or 20:59. Not sure, I was slow on the last split because I recently changed my hotkeys so I hit the wrong button at first.

With what you know of the game, how low do you think the record can go? Your sum of your best segments makes it sound like it's currently a total of 20:12. Think it can hope for much lower than an even twenty minutes?

As someone who used to do speed runs (not well, but there wasn't much competition for Super Metroid back then and I briefly held the record when a new glitch was discovered).

I like to think about routes and strategy myself, using tools I know from the game. Which means completely game warping glitches, like you blow up a bomb in a place that glitches the map and the map changes, are a total turnoff for me (I hate watching 3D Zelda speedruns; to me they are terrible).

I also think having high freedom of movement and a lot of movement options is really important. The more creative you can get with a route and little movement tricks, the more you get these "aha, that was a clever" kind of moments.

Super Metroid is still decent to watch...but man, Mario 64 is better, and I haven't seen a game that even really matches Mario 64. Levels are extremely open giving a ton of route choices, and encouraging crazy jumps to distant parts of the level, there's a good six or so jump options all of which are relevant, glitches are generally quite minor "clipped slightly through a wall to get the star behind, ok sure".

(Granted, part of this wanting to think about routes and taking me back to my days of route planning means I can only really get into watching games that I've played and understand decently well; I'm sure there's probably games better than Mario 64, but not necessarily ones that I've played).

and there are 0 star and 1 star Mario 64 categories where they skip the entire game

most games (especially very popular ones) have all kinds of categories, so it's kinda silly to label one game as good and one as bad for that reason

So I'm a little perplexed. Like I said, during my actual run I was late on hitting the last split because I hit the wrong key at first. And the time was 20:59.xx.

When I replayed the video and did the splits again, I'm getting around 21:01.

I recorded it using virtualdub and am currently using VLC media player to play it back. I think it's highly unlikely that I messed up the initial timing of my splits (as in, started the game before started the timer) and I know for a fact I didn't stop the timer too early. Could it be that VLC just isn't playing it back at the same fps it was captured?

I'm not at home to look at stuff right now, and I got fed up with it since I was really tired last night. Hoping someone here might have some insight.

I'm certain sub-20 is possible. I'm fairly confident 19:30 is not.

There's a TAS run on the #2 guy's (heh) twitch profile that's I think 20:14 and it's not totally optimized. I think the only way you could get below 19:30 is the discovery of some level/boss skips or quick kills that are as of yet unknown. There is already a known quick kill technique for two bosses, and there are multiple bosses with similar mechanics about them, so those things may very well exist.

think I found my problem in this quote from an old SDA post:

This investigation was sparked by the fact that a recent Mario RPG speedrun of mine was timed as 2:57:09 in realtime with WSplit, but by VirtualDub's timing the run was 2:57:38. That run was recorded with VirtualDub at 29.97 FPS interlaced through a Dazzle. The problem with this is that the NTSC Super Nintendo doesn't output 59.94 progressive/29.97 interlaced, it outputs 60.0988 progressive/30.0494 interlaced.

oops. of course this would be my first PB to not be streamed and archived via twitch

A new runner just posted a time a few days ago. DeviousTactics. He has some Cuphead runs but no other games. Not sure how dedicated he will be.

I'm curious if he just decided to run the game because it was at the top of the recent runs list on the speedrun.com homepage. It's neat to think I'm making ripples in the speedrunning community after only observing for so long.
