It's how how modern Sonic should be tbh. Just really stupid grimdark anime plotting featuring dumb looking cartoon animals. The fact that the line between "self-aware" and "bafflingly earnest" is blurred makes it even better.

It's basically Shadow the Hedgehog 2 with how hard it tries to be edgy and serious. Heck, the avatar's gameplay with the guns (Sorry, "Wispons") is pretty much Shadow the Hedgehog's gameplay.

tbh, its tone is a bit of a mess, especially due to sonic, who acts a bit too wisecracking for supposedly having been tortured for 6 months. I mean, I don't want him being super serious, but this is just exaggerating (though that's mostly due to pontac and graff, but the original version still exaggerates the wisecracking some times).
