It's a flaw of human nature, and something we need to battle at every turn.
It manifests in almost every facet of our society. Look at sports, even. Sports fans dial into one team(or a few teams), and hate other teams. It's completely unimportant, yet people are fanatical about it. In the 90s/00s I vividly remember console wars among children.
