In this case, speed limit = 70 mph.

I don't mean local highways where there's lots of exits, turns, etc. and speed limits of 55, but rather interstate highways or turnpikes and speed limits of 70, where exits are far apart, and they're generally built for lots of cars (I-95, I-295, I-81, etc.).

The one I go on the most (I-95) has a limit of 65. I usually tend to go around 70-75, but more if traffic around me is going faster.

Back in my younger years, I would literally have my cruise control set at over 100 mph. I got pulled over once in a 45 mph active work zone going 117, and he gave me a huge slap on the wrist (wrote me up for going 15 over and lectured me about speeding).

After that, I don't really speed anymore... just standard +10 mph like everyone else.

It saves a ton of time in a long distance route. Like if you're spending 300 miles on the turnpike, that stretch will take you 4 hours and 17 minutes at an average of 70mph vs. 3 hours at an average of 100mph.

At home in Canada, usually about 10kmh over most often.

Thailand on the other hand is kinda lawless on the roads and I drive as fast as I want if the road is clear. I've done 220+kmh on motorcycles here (though I did 300 on a GSXR1000 in Canada).

70 limit? if it's an area I don't know I'd probably just go in the right lane and go 70. most places around here the limit is 55-60 and I go 70-80 because it's MA. I used to drive to Boston and all 4 lanes would be going 80+ in rush hour with like 10 feet between cars

During my Boston days, I wasn't doing anything more than 30 MPH during peak hours. It took me a good 2.5 hours during a morning commute to travel from Burlington to downtown Boston on 93 south.

once they got all 5 lanes opened up and finally had all the construction out of the way it was so much faster, but only until the dorchester exit. leaving in the afternoon was just as bad as always though

My rule of thumb is usually 110% of the speed limit, and faster if the flow of traffic is faster than that.

So, in a 70, I'd go 77.

I usually got between 70 mph and 90 mph, hitting 88 mph is always fun though.

When people tailgate me I purposefully slow down though cause there is no reason to be a bumper humper at 80 mph.

The number one cause of accidents is NOT speeding. So what is it? The number one cause for accidents is switching lanes. when someone is going too fast, chances are you will eventually have to switch lanes. This creates a hazardous situation which is why you shouldn't speed. However, going too slow is also hazardous for the same reason: You cause others to lane switch.

The safest speed you can go is the same speed everyone else going even if its not the legal speed-limit.

I wish more people read the dmv handbook. they should make the test more difficult.

He's literally going the limit so he holds no fault if he's in the passing lane and actually trying to pass or something.

So yeah, I get annoyed about it when they're going the limit in the passing lane but I accept that it's literally my fault for going over the limit, not theirs.

The speed limit is exactly that - a limit. You are not allowed to exceed it for any reason. If I am going the speed limit beside a semi, nobody at all should be catching up to me. You are in the wrong, and I will force you into the right if I have to.

Speed limits are often set arbitrarily by busybody politicians and are not often indicative of the intended natural speed of traffic when the road was initially designed. Therefore, if you support speed limits that were intentionally set too low, you support tyranny.

@WaffIeElite

You are a danger on the road from what you have said, it is not your place to impede those trying to use the passing lane to pass(what it is there for), forcing people to go at soeeds you want is unsafe and you trying to police the road when that is not your job.

Used to be around 80 in a 65 if traffic permitted. A few speeding tickets later and now about 70.

You're barely saving any time on shorter trips. I dong need to get somewhere 5-10 minutes earlier at risk of a 500 dollar ticket.
