Didn't the House tax bill pass a couple weeks ago? And now the Senate passed it? So..... which one will be the actual tax bill?

Also, this is for tax year 2018, filed by April 2019, correct?

They are currently negotiating the differences between the two bills.

well, not formally

formally, the house will vote tomorrow on a motion to take the senate bill to "conference" OR to pass the senate bill as-is

the former is more likely, but the latter is not off the table -- it would speed up the process of the bill passing

if they do the former, the GOP leadership will appoint conferees to go to the conference. I believe the Senate would need to vote on a motion to go to conference and appoint their own conferees at that point. This could all happen tomorrow, but it might take a couple days.

These two conferences will debate to create a 'conference report' which reconciles the two bills. Once a majority of these conferees have voted on it, it is presented on the floors of both houses. No amendments allowed.

the conference delegation has instructions from their respective houses, but they are not binding. the conferees will be looking to do things that will be acceptable to both houses so that it will pass.

So the bill still has a chance at dying?
