Army of One

I have no idea what happened in this.

It's okay, nobody does. Probably not even Junji Ito.

The Army of One radio messages were brainwashing people into sewing themselves together.

But why was dude seemingly immune to it?

He spent all of his time by himself, it only triggered in groups. He also may not be immune, there were plenty of people still around.

This whole eating the snail people thing is FUCKED, even by eating demon placenta standards.

Sucks that her little brother is becoming one, but that idiot deserves it for the lighthouse incident >_>

Sushi mentioned that the spiral is catching up with the people who are becoming snails. Thats interesting... wouldnt gave thought there was a relation with speed BEFORE transforming, but its also clearly contagious as we saw in the Snail chapter. Im glad snails got brought back into the story, though.

Man, I keep forgetting about the siren. That was brought up on like the third page of the whole story and keeps quietly resurfacing here and there, subtly.

Hoping theres some big reveal there or itll feel unfulfilling.

This is getting really good IF its setting up for some payoffs and not just being like hey remember when??

Got a major kick out of seeing Sushis dad again in the tree stump. The original spiral. Join me in the spiral. Havent seen him since the kiln. Add that to the resurgence of the siren, snails, Dragonfly Pond at the center of everything, etc and something good is hopefully coming.

Also, even with the mosquito babies/placenta/etc, I think maybe the most extremely unsettled Ive felt was everything revolving around eating a snailperson alive. It was gross enough before, but they managed to one-up it by crawling in that guys shell and eating his face while he was still alive. CHRIST that is horrible, I feel weird just typing it out

WOW that is fucked up

Author has issues

Onto Labyrinth. I suspect SnailBro is fucked. I will NEVER get used to the panels where people start growing eyestalks btw

Oooh, makes sense that the row houses facing the pond were all originally part of a spiral, and they were just the only ones left. Kinda explains why theyre immune to the wind and stuff.

The concept of giant writhing masses of bodies are continually expanding this spiral structure of houses from the inside is, well, creative to say the least. Cant dock the guy for creativity.

That reporter getting swallowed up as the bodies finished the spiral was... not good. :(

Thats a really terrible way to go. And now theyve all slithered down towards the pond... this oughtta be good.

Finished. That was disappointing. Im not sure what the point of that last chapter was, we learned nothing new that couldnt be surmised. Also not really any info on what was up with her parents, any significance of the siren and why it bothered Sushi so much, what his deal was and why he and his family seemed so connected to everything... idk. No payoff.

Crazy creative horrifying ideas, but I feel like overall the whole thing didnt really have an actual story.

He does a lot of oneshots and has the type of horror that's never explained, so that's why longer ones like Uzumaki and Gyo can feel kind of weak when looked at as a whole. My enjoyment of Uzumaki is very much about the journey and not the destination.

well the one thing we learned because of the ending makes the entire series a bit more horrifying
the heroine is narrating everything that happened to her as if its a memory

but she doesnt escape the curse and get out safely she gets turned to stone
so because she is also the narrator it implies that she is still conscious and aware of her surroundings
just trapped forever as a stone statue

Okay, didnt quite think of it like that. Thats a nice element of unpleasantness, though at least shes in his arms?

That said, I didnt expect shed survive despite the past tense narration. Its horror.

Yeah, I think I will remember it fondly despite being a little annoyed at present. I wish I had gone in with the mentality of this is gonna feel episodic right up until the very end. I wouldve been okay with that, but frankly I think Ito did it to himself. He was the one that brought back the snails, Sushis dad, the siren, and all these other little tidbits right at the end which indicated to me that we were getting some kind of origin or explanation of how this began. They turned out to just be a throwback, which annoys me and feels weak. Itd have been less grating if he just plowed forward and didnt return to old plot points.

What it makes me think of is how Lost had several unaddressed mysteries when it ended, but honestly this is even a little more unsatisfying because he went out of his way to remind you of the stuff he hadnt answered right at the end.

The way it was written, Uzumaki was more creative and had more disturbing concepts and imagery, but Enigma at Amigara Fault told a better story in the four minutes it took to read it.

Upside is Del Toro and Ito have no real ties to Konami, and Id bet a lot of what Silent Hills was going to be comprised of couldnt actually be trademarked by Konami.

Maybe once we get Death Stranding and Kojima has had a little time to get over his heartbreak, they can make the game and call it something else.

Very unlikely. Del Toro was so upset with Konami's treatment he's officially said he's never going to work with game developers again.

:/

Maybe Kojima himself would be the exception, though, since its his own studio.
