Sometimes I wonder if this is weebism. All normal people know about japan is cartoons and games. Because that is their mass-media export. When you start studying japan everyday life out of obsession, I think that is true weebism.

There are many people who aren't self aware that they know nothing about Japan though and feel like they have some deeper insight into their culture and feel like they belong there just because they like Japanese media.

I think that's the shallow end. The deep end is realizing anime is garbage and still watching 3-5 series a season. And slowly picking up on different words, while having no clue how to speak the language. That sort of the thing

Guess I am a weeb then. The japanese train system and the Tokyo metropolis in general (not that that cam is in tokyo) is something to be revered. It is unique on earth. It's okay to be a little romantic about it. It can be taken too far though.

80's & 90's watching anime = anime fan
2010 to present watching anime = weeb

Ya'll kids made up the slang. I wasn't taken any more seriously watching anime in the 80's and 90's by people that didn't watch anime than people who want to call anime watchers weebs nowadays.

Like any hobby people can take it too seriously, and it gets to be an obsession, like some have pointed out in this thread. But I think weeb, like cuck, hipster, libcuck, cuckservative, is just simple minded people throwing out derisive insults at things they don't like, than it being used accurately as a label for people that like anime. And this is coming from an old timer than knows the last good anime was Princess Mononoke. So take that as you will.

The labeling on the internet is getting worse. It's like people are being exposed to so many viewpoints foreign to theirs they need to put vast swaths of people into little pigeon-holes in order to make sense of anything. Like 10 years ago watching anime casually was geeky but not worthy of its own label. It completely dehumanizes and provides an empty reason. Why does that person watch anime? not because they have their own motivations and reasons for doing it, it is because they are a weeb, that is what they do. Why does this person believe this other thing? Oh they're a lib or alt right, that explains it, don't think have to about it any more.
