Hi so I am at work (and what's an IT department am I right?) and a co worker had to have their computer switched out and she had two monitors.

The one connected to the HDMI port works fine
The one connected to the VGA does not, it won't even pull up to be detected in Windows.

I have:

Switched out the monitors
Switched out the cables
turned it off and then on again
Did that a second time because IT guys, am I right?
plugged everything back in and made sure everything was secure.

I am at a loss.

Yeah the computer had to be switched out for another reason and it worked fine for dual monitors.

Sounds like a problem with the VGA port to me.

Does the computer have a discrete graphics card, and if so, is the VGA port on it (as opposed to the motherboard itself)

@Regaro

It does but the VGA port is on the motherboard.

Could be an issue with the graphics card driver causing the system to ignore the motherboard ports then.

I actually had this exact same issue this weekend when I took my computer to a friend's place, but instead of debugging it I just grabbed an HDMI cable so uh yeah <_<. The above is what I think the issue was. But if other computers with same/similar setups work then I dunni

I actually had the same problem at work. IT chatted with the supplier of the monitor, but no luck. They just gave me a new monitor instead.

I ran everything through the video card and that solved the problem. Thankfully I had more hdmi adapters lying around.

Yeah that's actually not a problem for the record that's by design. PC will never detect motherboard video ports if you've got the graphics card plugged in. Like if you just had the VGA in the computer wouldn't boot and would've yelled at you.

Oh it appears that you solved the problem.

I was curious did the VGA work when the HDMI was not plugged in?

See, mine booted with VGA plugged into the motherboard, but I got no display or anything, so I was left guessing.

Good to know I was right though. Thanks Lopen.

Oh weird.

Pretty much every time I've done that on any computer it would display this

https://unsupportedvideoconfigurationdetected.com/images/system-halted-001.jpg

I guess sometimes you don't get the dignity of getting that message though. Maybe it's a Dell thing-- I'm thinking about it and every time I've gotten this message it's been with a dell. Anyway always a good first step on troubleshooting that in any case. The PC I built is the same way (though I don't know if it gives you that message never actually tested that)
