Pilots in Germany refused to deport asylum seekers from the country and grounded more than 200 flights in protest. Flight crews said they did not want to be involved in sending people back to Afghanistan after they had failed to be granted asylum.

Violence is still rife in the country after years of war and occupation by Western forces. Despite the ongoing violence and repression, Afghanistan has been deemed a safe country of origin in certain cases by authorities in Germany.

Between January and September 222 flights were cancelled, according to German government figures, with most 140 coming at Frankfurt airport. Some 85 of the cancelled flights came from Germanys main line Lufthansa and its subsidiary, Eurowings.

About 40 took place at Dusseldorf airport, where the controversial deportations are routinely accompanied by protesters on the tarmac. Several injured after passenger train hits freight train in Germany despite an increase in deportations, Germany remains the main destination for refugees and migrants to the European Union.

In 2017, Germany processed more asylum applications than all 27 other EU countries combined.

According to German newspaper Die Welt quoting the European statistics agency Eurostat the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees decided more than 388,000 asylum cases in the first six months of this year.

In October, an asylum seeker who fled the Taliban in Afghanistan as a child began studying for her PhD at Cambridge University.

While Hameeda Hussani graduated from the same prestigious university earlier this year, despite coming to the UK from Afghanistan at 13, speaking no English.

Seeing as CE is largely not European and not Muslim, it probably has the least biased perspective on this.

So what does CE Think?
