Ironically the 11th Grand Theft Auto Game.

It has the awkward position of being sandwiched between GTA5 which like it or not has utterly eclipsed it and GTA San Andreas which like it or not the nerds of the franchise passonately claim is the best one and untouchable.



As a result it's a game nobody talks about anymore. It's like Ironman 2, big when it came out but who's talking about it now?

But now here we are. 9.5 years removed (literally just barely over 9 from the PC version) from it's advent, and how does CE with an unbiased, unemotional, absolutely objective view the game?

It's the single most disappointing game of all time for me.
There was an obvious trend the 3D games had been going in of taking the formula and just making it bigger, better, and giving you more to do. San Andreas was my absolute favorite game ever at the time and I had such high expectations for IV and the first, at that point, "next gen" GTA would offer. Then they cut out loads and loads of content, gave this heavy focus on a story and character that was boring as fuck, and stripped almost all of the fun out of it filling it with monotonous, annoying, and repetitive missions as well as dumb shit like "hurry up and drive across the map to take your cousin bowling or he'll get mad at you!' Like who the fuck thought that was a good idea?

GTA 4 is probably my most hated game of all time simply because of how much I loved the previous games and the expectations I had for it and the fact that there really wasn't any reason for it to turned out the way it did.

I still like it. It's flawed, but it's still a good game. I liked the more realistic tone and style and the story and characters are pretty good. The game just needed more to do and more variety with the missions.

I'm fine with people not liking it, but it's not a bad game. It's certainly not the worst game ever that people make it out to be.

Decent story, horrible grand theft auto.

It's also the turning point where Dan Houser got too up his own ass about his writing. Luckily he seemed to dial it back for GTA V a bit where he realized that the game being fun was much more important than everything being gritty and grounded.

It felt like a huge upgrade from SA graphics and physics-wise and a huge downgrade in every other area. Driving felt like you were steering a boat while shitfaced

I think people don't talk about it because there's just not much to talk about. It's a boring, repetitive game.

And people tend to say, "At least the story's good." But I disagree with that. I personally found it boring and I wasn't invested in the characters in the slightest. The main enemy is almost confusing because you're only introduced to him for a little while before Niko's suddenly focused on murdering him.

I installed a driving handling mod that greatly improved the experience. I stopped taking taxis to missions and was having fun driving. That was the only major issue I had with GTA IV.

I really enjoyed the story, and I liked it more after playing V since the focus on Niko in IV was stronger.

The story had great cinematography but was poor overall.

The mechanics were fine but there was very little to do in the vanilla game and money was pointless since all you could do with it was buy weapons/armor and there was plenty of that lying around.

Still a great game, but doesn't deserve to be creeping up Metacritic like GTA V does.

I like it better than 5 not including multiplayer

I never cared for GTA V. Like at all.

The worst 3D one but I still had tons of fun with it. 100%'d both it and the DLCs. However, it should have had all the Ballad of Gay Tony stuff in it from the get-go.

Also it's difficult going back to Lost and Damned given what happens in GTA5 <_<

GTA4 was the last game I bought based on reviews and word of mouth. It was not good. Everything from the story to the driving to the gameplay was just mediocre and boring.

I thought it was really good despite the lack of mission variety and people calling you never made me butthurt like it seemed to do with everyone else. Honestly the only time a GTA let me down was V. I really don't get the big deal with that game. Like, at all.

TBoGT is awesome, the vanilla game is mediocre as shit. The online was fun though, I spent many of hours at the airport in freeroam chaos.

I liked the story, the missions, the atmosphere, basically everything connected to just playing the story. The problem was outside of the main story missions there was fuck all to do except hunting down pigeons and stunt jumps so it got really boring after you beat it once.

I honestly only got my moneys worth from two R* games: GTA 1 and 3. Everything else didnt feel fresh and I wasnt a fan of any of the stories. Lost and the Damned was okay, but Im just not into their games. I prefer Saints Row because you can make characters and conquer a map (something I love doing).

This. They also dialed way, way back on the fun cheats, which, unfortunately, carried on to V.

It was my very first game on PS3 and I was blown away by the jump in graphics as I was only used to PS2 level graphics back then. The city felt so real and full of life. Playing it for the first time was definitely a great experience for me and I loved it. But it has aged horribly like every GTA. I can't even go back to GTA V now. That's the thing with these games. They are one and done. No replay value.

I loved all GTAs, and personally think Vice City was the best one.
