I've never understood it. His domestic approval ratings are always sky high and while you could argue the Russian media is making the numbers up, Russians in online games/forums/reddit/etc. always seem to think him and Medvedev being in charge is the greatest thing.

He just announced he's going for a fourth term a couple days ago and the reports expect him to win.

Jokes aside, from Wikipedia:

"During Vladimir Putin's first presidency, the Russian economy grew for eight straight years, and GDP measured in purchasing power increased by 72%."

As a Canadian, our media has a far less biased position on Putin.

It's easy to see why people like him. After the fuckery that was Yeltsin in the 90's, a guy who portrays an image of toughness (He's basically a semi pro hockey player, he hunts bears, he drives racecars etc.) is probably welcomed by a lot of Russians.

Not everyone likes him (My friend Nika left Moscow because of him) but between the economy and the way he presents himself, it should be obvious.

And because there is a legitimate propaganda engine presenting him as the pinnacle of strong Russian leadership. So if conspicuous displays of state power are your thing, Putin's got his finger on your trigger.

It goes way beyond just that. Many russians felt humiliated by those they perceived as weak leaders who were bending over to the US. Putin has the aura of a much stronger leader and he keeps sticking it up to the US like with Crimea
