If you're into dungeons and dragons, I recommend the following:

Age of Empires II: The Age of Kings
Age of Mythology
Baldur's Gate + Tales of the Sword Coast
Baldur's Gate II: Shadows of Amn/Throne of Bhaal
Icewind Dale + Heart of Winter
Icewind Dale 2
Neverwinter Nights + both expansions (Shadows of Undrentide/Hordes of the Underdark)
Neverwinter Nights II + all three expansions (Mask of the Betrayer/Storm of Zehir/Mysteries of Westgate)

If you like real-time strategy games, I recommend:

Age of Empires II: The Age of Kings: The Conquerors
Age of Mythology

Any DOS games including X-COM.

Various old RTS' like Starcraft, Red Alert 2, Age of Empires 2, Dawn of War 1, etc or defence based games like Dungeon Keeper or anything in the Creeper World series.

Diablo 2 as aforementioned is a good choice for something with more action, I'm hesitant to recommend games like Heroes of Might and Magic 3 (2 doesn't work properly on a modern OS) or maybe Factorio if they might prove to be resource intensive.

Surely your laptop has to not be that terrible to not be able to run emulators as well, they would be perfect for this purpose you know, the entire GBA library alone would have literally everything.

Transcendence- The best space game I've ever played, shoot ships, jam unknown stuff into your systems, mine, do some shipping, it's all great. Not for the feint of heart though.
